Yes, I'm on vacation right now, but I've ben saving this tale because I was too pissed off about it to post right when it happened.
Over the past several weeks, my store has been targeted by a group of ink shoplifters. Whoever they are, they have a magnet that allows them to quietly open the security acrylics and slip out the ink, then they stash the box somewhere and leave. They've been costing us thousands of dollars but as of yet we've been unable to catch them because we simply don't have enough hours to keep bodies on the sales floor.
So, thus imbued with a sense of impunity, these guys have been getting more and more brazen. First they started leaving the empty boxes in more and more obvious places, even leaving them out in plain sight, just to let us know that they are getting away with it.
The Thursday before I left on my trip was a truck day, and because hours are now even TIGHTER, we were down to single coverage. One associate per department, one cashier, one manager. I was in the back room breaking down pallets and sorting them by department. I don't know what my colleagues were doing, but while I was out back the thieves came in again, and this time decided to get cute. They stole a shitload of ink, but rather than leaves the acrylics empty, they started taking MP3 accessories off the shelf, loading them into the boxes, then stashed the boxes all over the store. We were finding them for DAYS. And inititially we thought there was a massive MP3 accessory theft and wrote all that stuff off ($800 worth). But we actually found MORE than $800 worth of MP3 accessories hidden around the department.
I am completely at a loss to understand how this was not noticed. Sure, I was in the back, but it was not a busy day, so the electronics guy should have seen something.
I asked Focker half-seriously that if I were the one to eventually catch these guys, and were to "accidentally" belt him/her/them over the head, would I lose my job? he said that not only would he NOT fire me, but he'd give me a raise.
(Yes, I know doing so would be stupid, and I'm not actually going to do that, but it's fun to speculate
)
I just hope we catch these guys soon before the area loss prevention manager decides to fire us all for negligence (and yes, he DOES have the authority to do that. He can even terminate general and district managers).
