  • Sucky GED test taker

    Long post

Some information pertating to this post:
The metered lot across the street from the Visitor parking booth is owned by the city, not the university.
    My thoughts are in italics.

This happened later this morning, & Visitor Parking was reserved. The full sign was still on, & the big white sign stating Visitor Parking is closed for a special event was in front of the 2 gates at the booth.

There were no reserved parking spots on the event list for GED testing or for any other testing.

This particular customer was the 2nd sucky customer I dealt with today who was here to take a test.

    Here is what happened.

me: "Hi, how may I help you?"
female customer: "I am here to take my GED test."
me: "I am sorry. I know you are here to take your GED test, but the lot is closed for 2 different events & there are no reserved parking spots on the event list for GED testing, & I have no available parking spots."
female customer: "So where do I park at?"

    I give her several options.

female customer: "Does that mean the test has been cancelled?"
me: "I am sorry, but that was not what I said
*the parking office called me on Monday to let me know people were complaining I was telling them there was no testing today when what I told them was that there were no reserved parking spots on the event list for GED testing & that the lot was reserved*
There is testing going on today, but there are no reserved parking spots on today's event list for anyone going to testing services, & the lot is closed for 2 different events."
female customer: "Do you know when the test is?"
me: "I am sorry. I do not know."
female customer: "But I already have the information with me, & I am here to take a test."
me: "I am sorry, I know you have the information with you & that you are here to take a test, but the big white sign in front of the 2 gates applies to everyone, & I am not allowed to overrule that sign for anyone. So I have nothing at all to park in."
female customer: "So where do I park at?"

Again I repeat the same options I told her earlier. She asks me if she can park at the metered lot. I say yes.

    She leaves.

This was in the morning. She returns in the afternoon.

me: "Hi, how may I help you?"
Oh, it's her again. She does not look happy. There is a ticket in her hand.
female customer *looking at me like I am the big bad wolf*: You told me to park at the metered lot, but I got this ticket. I paid for my parking. I asked a girl where to pay, & she showed me."
You asked me if you could park at the metered lot. I said yes, but if you did not feed the meter enough change, that is not my problem.

me: "I am sorry, but you will have to go to campus police about that. The metered lot is owned by the city, & they have the information for the city."
just in case you want to complain to them about my not letting you park & if somehow you think I told the meter maid to give you the ticket in your hand
female customer: "But I paid the meter, & I got this ticket. Why?"
me: "The metered lot is owned by the city, & I do not know what happened."
female customer: "So will campus police let me park over there?"
me: "You will have to ask them about that."

She looks at me like I am the big bad wolf, & she leaves.

I take a break, & on my way back to the booth I stop by campus police & ask them if someone came to the dept. with a ticket for not paying the meter. The 2 guys in dispatch said yes.

    Wow,

The things people will say to try and get you in trouble>.<

That student obviously didn't get that you had no control over the metered lots

Honestly, between the beaurocracy (sp?) and sucky drivers, your job stinks. It's always damned if you do and damned if you don't. Sorry.

Might I suggest you consider re-evaluating the phrase:
"I know you are here to take your GED test, but the lot is closed for 2 different events & there are no reserved parking spots on the event list for GED testing, & I have no available parking spots."

From the way it's said, I can see why a customer might think you're telling her the test is cancelled. Why not just say, "The lot has already been reserved for 2 other events and I have no available parking spots". If the customer asks why GED testing isn't one of the scheduled events (after all it is taking place on campus), just explain that GED testing did not prereserve/prepay parking at the parking office. Keep it simple, sometimes that helps. But then, you also get some pretty amazing customers.

Sounds like a good idea. I am tired of the confusion.

I agree. Sometimes too much information is a bad thing.

If they don't have the right paperwork to get in just tell them the lot is full. Leave it at that, and let them move on.

I sure hope there isn't a section on common sense and tact on her good enough diploma test. She will surely fail.

              Bainisdhe and Hyndis:

I made some changes to keep my spiel as brief as possible.

Visitor Parking was reserved again today, & 2 customers arrived to take a placement test.

Neither of them became confused or asked me if the placement test had been cancelled. Both found other parking.

                though i wonder....

if they can't understand a simple sentence such as "this lot is closed, you have to park elsewhere" how do they think they're ever going to pass the GED?
