I grew up on 2%, but now I drink skim because my husband is lactose intolerant. He gets sick if he drinks even 1% but is fine with skim, and I want to keep having milk, so that's what we have.

Now if I could just get him to stop eating cheese and ice cream whenever he feels like it and then complaining that he's sick after...
    Strange. Possible misdiagnosis/description?

Skim, 1%, 2% & whole milk all have the same level of lactose (milk sugar).

Perhaps he's sensitive to another component of milk?

It's a possible mis-description by me. He never explains it well, probably because I highly doubt he's ever been formally diagnosed, just goes by the trial-and-error method. He tolerates skim milk and cheese better than he does ice cream or milk with higher milkfat values, but can take Lactaid to be able to have ice cream once in a while without the consequences.
It's little things that make the difference between 'enjoyable', 'tolerable', and 'gimme a spoon, I'm digging an escape tunnel'.

That's weird. I'm lactose intolerant too, and I canNOT drink milk, it makes me gag and does nasty things to my innards. Cheese doesn't really bother me, so long as I don't eat pounds of it. Ice cream is a no-go unless I take a couple of lactaid first. Yogurt doesn't bother me at all, because the lactose is already broken down by the enzymes. I love yogurt.

Does you husband have trouble with other types of fats too? Because it possibly might not be lactose intolerance, but something to do with his gall bladder (bile is stuff that breaks down fats). I'm just speaking from my own experience, though, YMMV.

You guys also have milk in plastic bags which I find fascinating lol
If they don't sell milk in plastic bags, where do you get milk bags for storing things/freezing stuff?

(What ticks me off is that it's difficult to find milk in reusable jugs here. It's all completely disposable stuff. The organic food place has glass bottles, with a good deposit too, none of this 10 cent nonsense, but it's really expensive milk).

Who needs extra vitamin D in the DESERT?!
People who hide in the air conditioning all day?

Call me crazy, but I like skim milk (which has [relatively] recently been re-labelled "fat-free"). And I don't think I've ever seen milk that wasn't fortified with vitamin D.

My grandma used to buy skim milk and freeze the bags... it turns blue! Funkiest stuff I've ever seen.

I buy 1L cartons whenever I think of it. I never use the whole thing (unless my son's on a cereal kick or I make Liptons Noodles & Sauce side dishes for dinner), but if I buy a 500mL carton, I run out too fast! *sigh*

No, we don't drink milk in my house. Occasionally I'll buy a carton of 1% chocolate milk for the kids as a treat.

well skim does have a blue tinge to it i know - it's how i tell if a glass is skim or not
didn't know you see more of the blue if you freeze it though

does it remain blue once you thaw it out?
