Our store refuses to do direct deposit
Thats a shame, it's alot painless than getting your check and having to go to the bank to cash it. Midnight on friday and BOOM! I gotz my monies.

My company also recently went to paying weekly, part of the reason I heard was cause the state of CA is soo in the dumps with money they need their tax money quicker

Direct deposit is great! My wife and I both have direct deposit. All I have to do is watch the online banking to see when paychecks hit our account, and pickup my check stub whenever it's convenient.

I have had direct deposit for over 40 years. I also have a line of credit for overdraft protection. I highly recommend both.

I think I got lucky when I was working in retail (about 5 years ago and counting). Had a bank right in the Wally world. That and never had to worry about running out of money pretty much, even when the bank closed for the night. Of course that doesn't mean I didn't get SC's.

Example 1 - Looking at a guy, when the name on the check is 'Beth'. "Hi Beth..can I see some ID?"
"Beth" - "I forgot the id but 'such and such' said it was ok."
Me - "Sorry, no ID 'Beth', I can't cash this. You can go to the service desk. 'Such and such' is standing right there. " Loud enough for 'such and such' to hear. "OF COURSE I CAN'T GUARANTEE THEY WILL CASH IT FOR YOU." so that "Beth" can't say I said it would be ok.

Example 2 - Mr. or Mrs. Third Party Check. "No, we can't cash third party checks. The bank is open, they might..MIGHT cash it for you."
"Mr. or Mrs. Third Party Check" - "Why do we have to walk all the way over there (10 feet about)? When you are right here and Wally World cashes checks?"
Me- "Yes, we cash checks, just not third party checks. For that you need the bank." *Motions to the bank 10 feet away."

The list goes on (and on and on and on). Problem is whenever they got a assistant manager or Manager, they always got their way. Period. Oh well, that's Wally World for you *shrugs*

Thing is, even the service desk never has more than $1400 in the till, at the absolute MAXIMUM (our registers simply don't allow it). They start with $500 and don't ring that many people up there, in fact I can't remember the last time they needed a pickup (which is required when you hit $1000 in your drawer).

Cashing one full time employee's paycheck would more than wipe out a brand new till, seeing as our minimum pay rate is 10/hour if you're brand new. Even cashing a few part timer's checks would wipe out the service desk till. So no, we don't cash payroll checks.

On the other hand, if you're actually buying something, no matter how small, as long as you have a positive check writing history* with us, you can get up to $50 back at a time. Do this too often though and you get blocked from getting cash back for a month.

*Positive check history is easy - write 1 check, 30 days after it clears the bank, you can start doing cash back, maximum of $50/day, I think the max for the week is $100. Even if you bounce one, once you pay it off, you can do cash back again. As an employee though, bounce 2 checks in 90 days, you lose your ability to do cash back again, and get nailed with a writeup. Cashier tills start with $400 - and if you do debit, you can get up to $100 cash back. It's always great when I start with a fresh till and get nailed by 2 or 3 $100 cashback customers and I'm left with only $1's and $5's. *sigh* Seems to happen to me a few times a month now.

Step 1: Go to the bank.
Step 2: DO NOT get only $100 bills.
Step 3. Quit being a jackass. What the hell is wrong with you?
