  • why only one?

Just a real quick one from yesterday that I just couldn't follow the logic of. So right behind the phone counter we sell accessories for the blackberries and iphones (even though we don't sell any iphones and never have). Right after I first arrived at work yesterday I went to zone it, and sitting right in front is a package of two blackberry gel covers. Honestly just a piece of rubber that costs 15 bucks for two of because they're specially made to fit them. This package had been torn into and one of the covers was missing. Now what I'm not understanding is why steal only one of them if you went through the trouble of ripping into the package.

Also, it was still sitting right behind the phone counter, so either they took it somewhere else, opened it, then brought it back, or they opened it right beside the counter. And I only hope if the latter was the case that nobody was at the counter when they did.

It happens alot. There was a case at my Malmart where someone opened a 12 pack of condoms and took 6.

I personally have found opened cereal bars with one bite out of them.

People just don't want to pay for more than they want, and...yeah...

Hmm...I would probably assume that that was a time saver. I'm guessing that it's faster to just grab a handful than to try and grab all of them. In the case of the covers though, there is actually one inside the other, so it would take more time to separate them than grab them both.

Easy... if the thief takes one, puts it on the phone immediately, and then gets stopped by security on the way out of the store, then the onus is on the store to prove that the cover on the phone wasn't on the phone when the thief entered the store. If the thief steals both covers, the argument can be made that it's less likely that someone's walking around with spare covers in their pocket.

          I guess.

What about the second question then?

Ballsy thieves knows that if you look like you belong there or if you act like you're not doing anything wrong, most people will completely ignore you. It's only when people look like they're trying to conceal what they're doing that other people notice.

Either that, or someone like my 8 year-old boy found the package with the missing item and put it on the counter for the employees to find. He's adamant about turning in stuff that people have stolen the pieces out of, usually with social commentary about how wrong the person was to steal stuff. I've got a good boy.

              aww, how cute.

personally I think it wouldn't be a bad idea to put sensors going into the bathrooms like Borders does since most of what get's stolen is done in there.

Someone stole a whole wii by taking it into the bathroom and taking it out of the box.

I agree. But I can't get management to agree.

My personal theory is that it somehow alleviates their guilt. Taking only half the package if half as bad as taking the whole package, right? Nevermind that the store can't sell the remainder.

What, no jokes about taking a Wii in the bathroom?

heh, like the big bag of recess peanut butter cups with only a couple missing that was taking up all the room in the stolen box.

That's what I was thinking too.

Either that, or they were thinikng on the chance they got caught, they'd be charged with a lesser degreee of theft.

Doesn't make sense on relatively low worth items, but remember whom we're talking about.
