  • Hurry Up And Go Very Slowly

An ontheday authorisation for compensation money takes me about twenty minutes to complete then the cashiers need at least twenty minutes to complete their cash audit on it before the customer can have it.

Today at quarter to four I received a phone call from a man who was entitled to an authorisation (for about £15, which he said he needed desperately as he was starving). In an attempt to help him, I called the cashiers and asked if I could do it very very quickly would they stay open just a little later (they usually close at four) in order for him to get a payment? They very kindly agreed.

The following conversation with the customer took place.

me - The cashiers have agreed to stay open so that you can get a payment tonight, they didn't have to do that, so you will need to thank them when you go in.I will need to complete the form as quickly as possible so you need to answer my questions quickly.

customer - "so are you going anywhere nice on holiday this year?"

    me -

Customer told me it was imperative I hurry up and get him some money, I pull all the stops out to do so against usual policy, and then customer holds me up by starting some small talk.

I just kept on asking questions, finally got the authorisation out, and then it was down to him, I don't know if he even turned up after all that, because when I told him he needed to physically be there before 4.30 or else the cashiers would close anyway, he said he had a bad leg and couldn't walk very well.

Well, I did what I could.
Customer "why did you answer the phone if you can't help me?"

He probably assumed that now he was 'in the system', the cashiers would be waiting for him to show up...

I'll bet he showed up an hour late.

I'll also bet that there will be an angry call on the next business day saying 'they said they'd wait for meeeeee!!!'
