    I'm a type 1 diabetic who shoots up 4-5/day.

My insulin is sent FedEx in a 90-day supply -- 4 of those 5-pen boxes. One pen goes in my pocket. The others stay in the refrigerator until I need them.

Other than the fast acting insulin (Novalog/Humalog) and the long acting insulins (Levemir/Lantus), insulin is over the counter. No prescription needed.

Diabetics who are serious about controlling their blood sugar know they can use regular insulin in place of fast acting insulin. Regular insulin is dirt cheap. Less than $30 at Wal-Mart for a 1000-unit vial that, if kept refrigerated, will last months. And syringes are also OTC and just as cheap.

Second, the woman needs to ask her doc for prescription that gives her more insulin so she's not at risk for running out before she's eligible for a refill. Her health insurance should cover whatever amount of insulin the doc says she needs.

Third, using insulin to give yourself low blood sugar as a sex thing? Jesus fucking Christ. Low blood sugar caused by too much insulin/too few carbohydrates is the single worst thing about diabetes. You're at risk for convulsions (you thrash around as if you're having a seizure) before quite possibly going into a coma from which you may not emerge. When I was single and dating around, I'd terrify women when in the middle of the night I'd start convulsing. They'd call 911 hoping the paramedics would arrive before I died. Stick a fork in a light socket if you want to know what low blood sugar-induced convulsions feel like.

oh and insulin besides being a sought after black market drug, is also considered a sex drug for S and M sex... you know a tempura y coma... hot coma sex with the unconscious woman.
It's supposed to simulate necrophilia, I think. I'll have to check my sources again. Been a while since I talked to anyone in those circles (got out of it at...17 I think? The circles, I mean. Never participated).

...otherwise what would stop somebody who isn't a insulin-dependent diabetic from just walking up to the pharmacy and buying insulin and syringes?
        In the US, nothing.

All insulins are prescription-only when they're first introduced, usually because they act differently than what many diabetics are used to. So for the first few years, the FDA will require a prescription so a doc can make sure you're using the new insulin properly. The newest long acting insulins, for example, can't be mixed in the same syringe with other insulins. And if you're used to regular insulin needing 45-60 minutes to take effect, a new fast acting insulin that kicks in after 20 minutes puts you at risk for not being prepared when your blood sugar drops. (You usually take fast acting insulin with food. That's not necessarily the case with the others.)

But in time all insulin becomes OTC. At least in the US.

And we've stopped worrying about junkies buying syringes which are now also OTC. In fact, it's better that junkies have clean syringes. Less chance of AIDS and other stuff being transmitted by dirty needles being shared.

Of the drugs that are prone to abuse and/or recreational use, insulin's pretty low on the list. The only people I know who use insulin who are diabetics are body builders who shoot up with regular insulin to drive glucose into their muscles to improve their workout. At least that's what excess insulin theoretically does for them.

I went to Wally World not long ago and saw diabetes test strips locked in cases. I couldn't understand why until I saw how much each box cost . So yeah, I can understand the need for some form of insurance to pay for diabetes supplies. But I also understand the insurance company's refusal to refill early. I'm sure not everyone is honest with their intentions. Just as much as some who steal test strips from Wally World aren't diabetic.

Just checked syringe prices for my own self enlightenment. Looks like you can get a box of 100 of them for $10. Thats surprisingly cheap!

For me (and only me) Byetta, 3 month supply... 65
              Lantus, 3 month supply... 65

You better believe I keep the unused pens in the fridge and only have my current ones out. I even have them in a area I KNOW they will stay within their temps.

Also before the A/C was in, it would get well over 90 in the house and I kept my pens in a refrigerated pack because I didn't want them to get too hot. After the A/C was in they are just kept in a regular travel case. So maybe the ladies house in the OP did what mine did and got way too hot inside and that's how they spoiled. And if they spoiled why didn't she take them to her doctor to try and get replacement?

                Mis-Use

One possible way is mis-use thinking Insulin injections as a magic cure. Remember SC believe all their problems can be solved as if by magic.

Yes, I am diabetic but I don't need insulin yet, and I am trying to lose weight to delay that day as long as possible.

I was told a story at the clinic where they teach diet and exercise approaches to handling the disease about a woman who did need insulin, however she still loved her parties, booze and sweet foods. Result, she would eat anything and as much as she wanted then just take an insulin shot to counter it. Stupid woman, within a few years she ended up with major eye-sight and blood vessel problems that she should not had seen for decades.
