So late last night, and I'm talking Its-3-am-Im-Only-Up-Because-The-Kittens-Wouldnt-Shut-Up ....I hear my computer dinging like crazy. So I go to check it out, and its a client who I just finished a MAJOR project for a couple weeks back. His site is one of about 115 sites that are all using the exact same script. We went to same fairly excessive lengths to try and mask the fact he was using it, but there were a lot of things that we simply could not change. Everyone who uses the script is aware of this...its a big complaint about it.
Client: hey did you see <new site>?
Seraph: (only here for a min) yes, I designed it.
Client: sorry, but there are some similarities :/
Seraph: how? O_o
Client: let me show you <photobucket link>
Seraph: Ok so some similar elements...
Client: ya
Seraph: Aka, the same search fields that are required to be on all sites with this script. Aka the same inbox feature that every site has, with this script. Aka the same buttons every site is required to have, with this script. You are telling me that since they have the same script, they are copying you?
Client: no not the fields, you know what I mean. not the search, everyone of course has that
Seraph: dude, he has the same elements you have on your site, because they all use the SAME script. You want something different, use a diff script.
Client: i wasnt talking about the elements, i was talking about how it's set up with the boxes
Seraph: the folder layout stuff?
Client: and the folder layout, yeah
Seraph: has to be the same with this script. Its hardcoded into the script, you know that. You and everyone else have the SAME folder layout.
Client: ok
Client: i was referring to the design
Seraph: yeah, we have to keep a similar sort of setup for offer pages, again, due to the script
Seraph: I fail to see the part about a design for that, especially since your "folders" are just text links across the top
Client: no one else really had the search box
Seraph: You just said EVERYONE has it. If you mean a pretty little box around it, thats going to be on a lot of sites now
Client: its going to be on alot of sites now?
Seraph: Probably. Think about it. You have something nice, people will want to be like that.
Client: well why does every site have to look the same? i wanted to be different, thats why I went custom
Seraph: Everyone loves it, it'll be status quo soon enough. And lol no, you are using, again, the SAME SCRIPT AS EVERYONE.
Seraph: Its going to happen
Client: not if i get one copyrighted and made to be copyrighted
Seraph: You cannot copyright that design, its mine.
Client: thats my next goal, because I dont want to be the same as everyone
Client: no not that, my next one
Seraph: copyrighting is a lot harder than you might think >< You will have to prove everything is 100% yours, not derived from other stuff
Client: your not the only designer
Seraph: Oh no I know that
Seraph: thats not what I'm saying and wow that was rude
Seraph: I'm off to bed. See ya.
Client: bye
See, he's screwed now and doesn't realize it. He just paid me $750 for a complete web design project, and kicked and screamed over that price. I'm the best option for him with this script. So by angering me, he is down to one of two options:
A) Use the other designer in the industry, who isn't bad, but definitely isn't as good as I am.
B) Get a custom script, hire a designer as good as I am, and get it "copyrighted". He's looking at $15,000 for that.
Considering he threw a FIT over $750, I can't wait to hear what happens.
