  • Don't Blame the Post Office

I have been selling random stuff on eBay, Amazon, and Craigslist for over a decade, and I have never had so annoying a buyer as this guy. I think he's trying to set me up to demand a refund while keeping the item, but you can be the judge.

Incompetent Douche (ID) buys an item from me and pays for priority shipping. No problem, I use the online USPS to pay for the shipping since it gives me delivery confirmation for free. The fact that I have delivery confirmation is important: ID doesn't know I'm tracking the package.

More than a week goes by and I get an email from ID demanding to know where the item is. He claims the post office in his city is holding the package and won't release it, making it sound like it's my fault for the delay. I look up the tracking number and check it online. Seems the post office tried to deliver it, wasn't able to, and left a notice for him to schedule redelivery. They even gave him three options: fill out the little stinking form and put it in his mailbox the next day; call the 1-800 number to reschedule the delivery; or go online to reschedule the delivery. I explained all this to him, gave him the tracking number and the post office's web site, and told him he needed to schedule the delivery for his own convenience before they send it back to me.

I get a second email from the ID claiming that he spent almost an hour on the phone with the post office and they were telling him the tracking number is wrong. I was certain I had it right, but I checked it anyway. Sure enough, it was fine. But now he's not only complaining about the post office being lazy for only attempting one delivery, he's blaming me for using them. They only tried to deliver it once because they were waiting for *him* to tell them when he wanted them to try again!

I went to the post office's website and in less than five minutes had the damn thing scheduled for delivery. I even copy-pasted the tracking number from the email I sent him just to make sure I had it right the first time. I'm going to keep track of this thing to ensure that it gets delivered. Got to figure out what I'm going to do if I find out he's refusing delivery.

Can you request the post office deliver it back to you and refund him his money or no?

Who wants to bet item either is damaged or "lost". This is why I now require signature with everything I sell on Ebay.

I don't want to accept the item back because it was a piece of outdated electronics that I had a hard time selling in the first place. If I did take it back, I wouldn't refund him his shipping (the delay is his fault, not mine, not the post office's) and I just know he'd slam me in the review for not refunding his shipping. I would much rather make him honor his side of the purchase and just accept the damn package.

I know the item isn't lost or damaged because the post office still has it in their facility. Plain and simple, the jerk didn't want to be bothered to read the delivery slip that they left him so he could get the thing delivered when someone was at the business to accept it. As with many SCs on this site, he believes his inability to read and follow directions is my problem.

I almost hope he is trying to scam you, because that means he's not a complete and total idiot who can't figure out how to follow extremely simple directions. ... *remembers what website this is* ...oh right

yeah, it smells like a scam to me; he needs to either get off his ass and solve the problem, or be out the money and the item.

no mercy for the lazy and stupid.

And he's rude, too. It's been over 24 hours since I sent him the email letting him know that I went out of my way and arranged everything for him. Not one word in response. I expected at the very least a "Huh. Well, I'll see if they deliver like you say they will." Silence is just rude.

Well, the Post Office delivered the package today... got confirmation that he got it at 3:22 pm, Pacific time. I sent him an email letting him know that I know he got it and thanking him for his purchase.

Now I have to wait and see just how sucky he's going to be.

If this is ebay, he'll probably neg you anyway, since on ebay buyers always get positive feedback.

Sorry. At least you won't be out the item and the money.

                        OMG! A happy ending!!!

I just got an email from the buyer: he's got the package and thanked me for all the work I did to straighten out the shipping! He left a perfect feedback score, as well.

So, he may have been a goober about figuring out how to read a delivery attempt ticket, but at least he acknowledged my efforts.
