There were some security features in those old bills, but very few people knew what to look for. I worked in a place that handled a lot of money, so we had a big poster with what to look for. The security features were not as easy to see or obvious as the new bills, though. Probably better for all that they did change them.
Oh, I know that there were security features, but the only ones that I remember were the foil patches, the textured paper and the fine lines in the design. I thought it was a big deal when they introduced the watermarks and the half number on each side of the bill.

As I work for a bank. We get these all the time. Usually from stores who use their counterfeit pen. All the pen does is check that the bill is printed on the correct paper. A washed bill will pass that test. This is why I check every 100 and 50 that comes across my desk.
You would not believe how many SCs get offended by this. (Or maybe you would... look who I'm telling.)

We got hit by someone who checked a $100, SAW the wrong watermark, and took it anyways because they assumed it was a bad print. Then found out from management later that it was a fake but was not told how to tell! None of the cashiers at work seem to have heard of bill washing...and I'm getting teased because I do! I can't win!

unless they've changed the formula on the pens some, the detecting pens can be fooled even with legit bills, due to too much starch present.

          THE PENS ARE NOT FOOLPROOF!

          my 2 cents.
No they are not. I've posted this before, but for the benefit of any new people reading this: The US Secret Service guide to detecting counterfeit money. Anybody who works in a money-handling job should read these pages and remember the tips.

also for even MORE money fun...... i don't know if they fixed the problem or not, but i DO know that in the early bills with the security strip, that that strip, if you're really careful, CAN be removed. just slides right out of it's slot in the paper.

so just because a bill doesn't have a security strip, doesn't mean it's NOT real. just look for small rips in the bill near the area where the strip is normally located.

anyone besides me seen this demonstrated?

Hee hee! I've actually done that! I'd get bored and pick at the edges of the bills and pull the strips out with my fingernails.

Yeah, yeah, defacing currency is a crime. I don't do it anymore. But evil has to start somewhere.

When you hold up the bill to the light though, (as those in the US probably know) there should be a watermark of Benjamin Franklin on the right hand side. Or when you hold it under a security bill checker there is a 3D security thread that identifies it as a hundred.
This thread taught me to actually look at the face in the bill, not just look for A face in the bill.

.. She's personally seen them twice, and she won't risk accepting one since the money will come out of her pay!

It's against the law to make employees to pay for mistakes out of their pay. If they want to fire her for take a bad bill, that's their right. But no taking money out of a paycheck.

ditto. ditto. ditto. ditto. They can't force her to pay for customer fraud. They can fire her, which is equivalent to forcing her to pay for it though. You can pay X amount out of your check or have no check.

You are right. It's a crappy choice.

I was once told that the best move was to agree to let management take the money from your check while simultaneously complaining anonymously to the department of labor. Illegally deducting money from paychecks is the one thing the department of labor will come after employers for.

The pens are worthless now. We don't even have them. We have to go by the feel and look. We are no longer allowed to check them infront of the customer. They felt like they were "criminals." But I'm glad we don't get pentalized for it. We've been getting fake everything except one dollar bills.

I was at ___ store the other day and I couldn't resist telling the clerk that the pen doesn't work and I told her how to check it. I was trying to help her... She gave me the stink eye and ignored me. It was my hundred. But don't worry my total was higher than seventy, so I wasn't taking her change

With SC's surely you are damned either way. You check in front of them and you are accusing them. You check them behind the counter/out of view you are switching them for counterfeit bills. Genuine customers will never mind you checking though.

I remember one day at the library I see a homeless person with some copies of currency, like he used our color copier to make copies of them. I called the Secret Service. I don't know if anything happened to the homeless person.
