As Mystical said, 'wannabe cops' aka private security does a LOT to keep the general public safe. In addition to what she mentioned, I know my friend the security guard:
* Searches his building multiple times a shift for security risks including fire hazards. (He's prevented issues that way before.)
* Monitors who enters and exits his building.
* Checks for trip hazards and other safety violations (technically, that's the safety officer's job, but he's going that way anyway).
* Keeps an eye on who loiters near his building.
* Keeps current on techniques used by everyone from minor vandals to full-on terrorists.
* Keeps current on tell-tale signs of an attack on his building or the staff/visitors.
* Handles the simple things like salting the sidewalks.
* Other stuff I don't know about, because he does it all invisibly.
You don't notice a security guard who's doing his/her job, other than as an apparently idle person in a uniform standing/sitting near the door.
You only really notice them if they've failed, someone else (an engineer?) has failed and they're evacuating you, or Mother Nature has shown her cruel side.
Edit to add: He also has current First Aid training and liaises with all the emergency services.
Seshat's self-help guide:
1. Would you rather be right, or get the result you want?
2. If you're consistently getting results you don't want, change what you do.
3. Deal with the situation you have now, however it occurred.
4. Accept the consequences of your decisions.

I guess because the People seem to want it, we might as well just go back to Monarchy. I mean, people seem to believe in the Class System so much.
As they say, Smart people talk about ideas. Average people talk about events. Dumb people talk about other people. And rank them. According to their perceived "class."
