(Actually I don't see why someone would have a heart attack over red and not over green or blue. Wouldn't red or orange be easier to sell people on, since they're current wedding colours, and I don't know of any culture that still uses blue?)
Red has certain<ahem>connotations. I don't think they'd actually have heart attacks, but he says his extended family might be a little, um, startled.

I'm not getting married in white for two reasons, number one being there's no way I'm spending that much on a dress I can't wear again, and that being the case, white is not my best colour, being that I am a)very pale, and b) somewhat clumsy.

The second reason I won't get married in white is that that I am most very definitely not<ahem>pure.

I want white or ivory or whatever version of white looks great with my skintone. But I MUST and WILL have a purple crinoline. Like hers.

I had an off-white wedding dress, and after alterations I paid less than $200 for it. I picked out a bridesmaid style and had the store order it in white. Since it wasn't considered a 'wedding dress', I didn't have to pay the exorbitant price.

Not saying every bride should have to wear white, since I think it should be what a person is comfortable with, but it's an idea on how to save money if you want to wear white

I got a bridesmaid dress too, my family wanted the whole conspicuous consumption thing, but agreed to let me wear ivory instead of white. (My jacket was blue to keep the ivory away from my skin. Yes, I know, I'm horribly traditional.) However, it still cost me well over $100 because of the required alterations. While I do have more expensive dresses, I've worn them more than three times. It still ends up not working. (While I normally don't approve of misrepresenting myself, I am proud that I wore my dress again. If I had to wear a white dress for my wedding, at least I didn't espouse what a white dress stands for.)
