  • That's not a minor change...

Short and sweet. I'm still dealing sadly with some of the suckitude from the rather long thread I had a couple weeks ago...will have an update to that soon.

This one however, is interesting. A client asks me how much it is to swap out a prize image on his site.

Seraph: Just one prize, right? And over there where it will be isolated from the rest of the image?

    SC: Yeah

Seraph: If its only ONE prize, and its in that specific spot, it'll only be $1 to fix it.

    SC: Great!

Seraph: Ok, so what do you want there instead?

    SC: That's great

Seraph: Glad you like the price. Do you know what you want in place of the current prize?

    SC: Yep!

<I wait an admittedly awkward three whole minutes>

Seraph: ....Can you tell me what you want there?

    SC: Oh, sure!

    <Three MORE minutes pass>

Seraph: Um....I need you to tell me what you want, so I can swap it out.

SC: Oh, I haven't decided yet!

    Seraph:

So I end up waiting TWO DAYS for him to finally tell me what he wants. All of a sudden, while I'm in the middle of working on a different project, I get a message from the client with four images attached. Wait, four?

Seraph: Hey, got your message. Why did you send me four images?

SC: Oh, because I want that prize there switched out, and that one in there, and those two there changed. I'll send you the dollar right after you're done.

Seraph: You realize that the dollar charge was for changing one prize, in an isolated spot. You're asking for me now to edit a photo where I will need to add perspective to the prize, proper shading, etc etc.

SC: Oh....how much is that gonna be? $2

Seraph: I'll do it for only $6.

SC: OMG!! Well...I guess I'll have to be ok with that then. Switch out those images!

I mean, seriously...I made sure I was crystal clear what the first quote entailed, and he still took it as "Will Change ANYTHING In Regards To It For A Dollar".

I really, really freaking need to break out of this industry of sites. Badly. ><

Don't you love how they do that! My customers just love to say "oh while you are here can you......" I try to accomodate them best I can but I make my schedule for the day based on what they told me thehy wanted, not what it turns out they really wanted so I end up having to reschedule them or someone else.

I hope the $1 was just a random number you made up and not the actual charge!

Those stupid $7 scripts have destroyed that industry. Get out now. Go find a bunch of customers outside the field, and start working with them.

          I'm trying my darndest to.

I'm not really sure how to break out, but I'm probably just going to set aside a couple of weeks sometime soon to work on broadening my portfolio....aka making a bunch of fake site designs. Right now, my folio is swamped with just tons and tons of designs for that specific industry, and it's torpedoing my chances with "real" clients.
