  • First day of fall semester was crazy

    Long post

The first day of fall semester was crazy for me and for campus police.

At one point there were only enough spots for the reserved spots on the Outlook calendar...a small amt. So I called the parking office to let them know, & the full sign was turned on.

The student lots at the university I work at are open to anyone not having a permit, waiting to receive their permit, and to the general public since campus police & the parking office will not be handing out citations for the first 2 weeks. The parking office mails the parking permits to the students, & it takes a while for some students to receive their permit, & so this is why the student lots are open to anyone. There is no charge for anyone to park in the student lots. There is a shuttle bus that drops you off in front of the main bldg.So I have been directing students and visitors who do not want to pay the $5.00 parking fee to the student lots. I even printed many maps from the universities website, highlighted the routs, & circled the student lots. Most of the students & customers were happy except for 2 customers.

My telling these 2 customers "the garage is full", letting them know about the open student lots, & offering a map was not acceptable to them.

    I was told...
    • "this is rediculous
    • "I will only be here for 15 minutes"
    • "Can I look for a spot?"
    • "Can I wait here for a car to leave?" *I have seen campus police tell people who did this to leave, & so I told the person this*
    • "I will be back in 5 minutes to see if a spot is available"

No matter what you say, I cannot make a spot appear for you out of the blue. & no it is not my fault that it is very busy the first day of fall semester

I cannot change the fact that Visitor parking is full, & no, I will not tell you there are only enough spots for the guests on the event list/the Outlook calendar. The less time I have to deal with difficult customers the better

No matter how long you will be here, no, I will not raise the gate for you. The customer who said was not convinced that the lot was full. I lost track of how many times I repeated myself.

You can return in 5 minutes, but the situation will still be the same.

Then there were the students here to buy their books, to register for their classes *late registration was going on*. Visitor parking was full, & so I had to direct them to the other lots. One guy returned & said "those lots are all full", & so I checked Visitor parking. It was still full. I told him the same thing I said when he first arrived..."the garage is full."

Then a campus cop told me that after checking the meter lot across the street & seeing that it was full, he told the students wanting to park there that it was full. Some students would not believe him & asked him if they could just look for a spot. He told the students who did this "I am telling you it is full. You will have to find other parking either at the student lots or at the public pay lots." He even gave me a bottle of Ozarka water.

When I called the parking office to let them know I was taking a short break *I needed one*, "Nancy", who answered the phone, sounded stressed out.

The highlight of my day was when a guy arrived & told me he was here for a meeting regarding adding at least 2 floors inside the Visitor parking garage. He told this probably won't happen until December. He arrived after 12 p.m., & luckily at that point people began exiting the garage, & so he was able to park.

Least the last customer and the Campus police sounded friendly.

And I sympathize with you for the customers telling you, "I'll only be here five minutes.." etc. I get almost the same amount of crap about parking under the hotel canopy. I can say truly: I know how you feel!
