(bg: I'm white. Awesome Coworker is black. Bum is black. This is important.)
My coworker just buzzed in a guy before I could get the words out to let her know, uh, NO. DO NOT WANT.
I turned around to grab a bottle from a fridge for one of my regulars as he indicated he wanted a business card. Which made me think maybe he wasn't the bum I thought he was, and I started to relax a little. Thinking maybe she judged correctly, and this guy wasn't gonna be all that bad.
Then he asked her for a dollar.
Awesome Coworker said, "No. What, you want me to open the register and give you money? That's not happening."
Guy stood there. Just...stood. Staring.
I turned around and added, "Sir, I'm sorry, but we can't help you. Have a good day."
He said, "Well, I KNEW not to ask YOU. YOU aren't MY PEOPLE."
Then he stared.
I told him he needed to leave.
He growled, "I expected that from a WHITE PERSON, but not from MY PEOPLE."
He continued to stare.
I told him with that sort of language, he needed to leave.
He said "I'M LEAVING."
I said, "You're saying that, but I don't see your feet moving."
Finally he turned around and kept grumbling about WHITE PEOPLE and "I'll leave when I leave you can't tell me when to leave". At which point I repeated that he needed to leave NOW.
He sauntered out finally. Still grumbling.
Awesome Coworker has now gained the understanding of WHY we have the buzzer system.
