We lost a member of our overnight crew last week to a massive heart attack. There is a wreath at the front door now with a banner on it that says "In loving memory of _____". Of course we get a lot of questions, wanting to know who this person was and what happened to him. Most people are sympathetic and say it's pretty scary and 'makes you think' to know he was just here last week and now he's gone. However I had one person come in the door and inquire . . . this was before I'd found out how the associate passed away and I said I didn't know when they asked how he died. The guy said "But he ain't breathin' now?"
Me: Uh, well no, obviously.
Him: He got run over by a semi that came here to unload. That's my theory.
He then walked away laughing. I know some people have different styles of humor and all, but really, I found this really tasteless, considering the change in mood I've seen in the overnight crew when they come in now. I only knew the man by his face and we'd always tell each other to have a good night when I was leaving, but I don't think it's anything to have a laugh over. The amount of amusement this customer was deriving from the situation was disturbing.
