Five years ago, we had a winter storm hover right at freezing and everything was covered in ice. I could hear branches starting to fall as I was leaving work and there was no power by the time I got home. It was sureal, not too cold to sit on the porch and and I could listen to the ice in the trees, like crystal chimes, well except for the *Crash* every 5 minutes.
The next three days were a blur. We got a truck a day, full of emergency supplies while having to do all transactions without the computer due to having just enougth power to turn on the lights.
Now this weekend we have a storm coming and the local media has been hyping it all week. This morning was non-stop people; Ice Melt, Snow Shovels, Heaters, De-icer, Lamp Oil, Kerosene and Do you have any Generators?? By noon, the sun came out and it was around 50 degrees and people seemed to realize that the world was not going to end today and they slowed down, but as we got closer to closing, people came back and "What do you mean you are out???"
Now we have an emergency truck of supplies coming tomorow, I'm sure it will show up right about when the rain starts. And then after another evening and morning of "Everybody Panic!!", I expect everyone will be back.
I had one lady buy 10 five gallon gas cans so she can power her generator. Several people called about generators, wanting us to reserve them. Not this time! After the ice storm, we had people who reserved generators but never came to get them. And then you have people demanding to buy one of the twenty you have, but can't because they are reserved.
Now here is the best part, if you check the Weather Channel, they are calling for rain. The say we might see a little snow on Sunday, but they are calling for highs in the 40s and 50s. And if this does go bust, I can imagine what Monday and Tuesday will be like with people trying to return Heaters, Generators, Snow shovels........
