  • Why Did You Answer the Phone?

I get this a lot. I work at a restaurant and we answer the phone after close, for any number of reasons (it's the boss, someone from another store, the police, etc.).

    It usually goes like this:

Me: Thank you for choosing (restaurant name), sorry we are closed.
Customer: Than why are you answering the phone?
Me: For safety and security. Sorry we are closed.
    -click-

The other day the guy called me a dumb ass, so I proceeded to tell him all the reasons we answer the phone. This went on for a minute or so, and he was like, "Sorry. Have a good night, man".

You know if you didn't answer the phone they'd be just as irritated. What they're really saying is "But I'm calling why aren't you open?"

True, and I was seriously surprised the guy actually apologized...

If you're allowed, try answering with "Restaurant X security!". Stops most folks from asking useless questions.

A long sample found in some Orb tracks goes as follows:

          *ring*
          "Security"
          "Hello, is that Reception?"
"No, it's Security. Reception's gone off duty sir."
          "Oh..."

...the rest of it appears to be a rather well-executed prank call involving Haile Selassie.

What are "Orb tracks"? Please explain. Thanks.

Well, here's an example. The sample I mentioned is actually part-way though this...

This includes a transcript of the sample.

We used to this at the Office-ay Epot-Day I worked at - most people would choose to not hear the "security" part ( rambling into "I'd like to talk to someone in computers!") but some would understand, "Oh, you're closed?"

                /sigh

Years ago, when I first started the pizza business, there was a server that would tell people, "GO EAT SOME FRUIT" when they called after hours. She did not last long... It was for other reasons, but I digress.

SC: Why'd you answer the phone?
                      Me: it rang!
