In the US you get charged for minutes - doens't matter if it is incoming or outgoing
Voice Mail is not considered minutes - unless you are using the cell phone itself to listen to the voice mail (this can be done by a land line phone)
Of course this also depends on the company you go with and which contract you choose.

I use text for the simplictiy - like if I am meeting friends for lunch - the first one there gets the table and then texts the others with where in the resturant to go
Need to pass info on to someone and really don't want to get into a conversation or have time for it
During the day - while either side of the conversation is at work - don't want to pass personal infor through company computer / not allowed to/ don't have access - it can make it easier

On the other hand I have a friend that doesn't like to get txt - so I don't txt her - I send her e-mail or call after work from land line (I am cheap)

wow, no offense but your mobile services suck.
I'd thought you'd noticed that Whiskey was in North America. .

The Math & Engineering library has a big sign up saying "text, don't talk", because yes, people are inconsiderate enough to make phone calls in the library. (It's funny, because it shows a Blackberry. I guess only people who want the coolest new phones need reminding? And yes, I know, a phone running Android is cooler, but that's nerd cred. Blackberries are the everyday-cool items).

-I've used texts to ask my brother for a fork while he was up refilling his drink at a fast food place.
-If it's late at night and I send a text so that I don't have the person's phone ringing before I get to voicemail.
-I can send texts to phones from my yahoo mail. I've used it to send texts to my supervisor at home while I have to deal with a SC that's right in front of me.

That voicemail message was terrible and rude. I would have told the customer I was homosexual, even if not, just to watch him squirm. Weenie.

I hated texting until I got a QWERTY phone. I finally gave up, my sisters and my kids refused to stop texting me. We have unlimited texting (teens on the plan pay for it lol) so I just said to heck with it. My new phone was free, I love it.

Well, likely there aren't any girls calling this guy up, so I guess he thought that he could be as douchetastic as he likes on the phone message
well not smart girls at least.

I really love that some of my professors will give us their cell phone numbers so we can text them. It's far easier than calling them, and more immediate than emailing them. My clinical professor encourages it, since she can prioritize us instead of having her pager explode (she has to watch over 10 of us in 3 different areas).
