In Skuzzball's case, what happened was Dude #3's wife (girlfriend?) had suddenly noticed that her beer was being drank by Scuzzball. She was completely thrown by this. Why she didn't say something to Scuzzball I don't know.
She was probably shocked into silence by his utter gall. Or too polite to "make a scene" as many women are taught to be.

I hate human parasites. Dude, there's a reason people don't want you hanging around with them. Get a clue!
I don't have an attitude problem. You have a perception problem.

Pretty much nailed it on the head, on both counts.

He now has a clue. I gave it to him, in spades.

It felt good to throw someone out, as I don't get the opportunity to do so very often. And everyone was happy with this. Except Scuzzball. In other words: everyone that matters.
Could there be any chance that the others in the group just did not like him, and decided to "embellish" things if not outright lie?

I know only too well just how lacking in honesty most people can be (I have lost count of the number of times that people have lied to cause trouble for me. It is the reason that I now carry a recording device everywhere I go).

            No.

Yes, I know, there is always a "chance," but in this case, just no. While they clearly did not like him, dude was a scuzzball and a freeloader, and when I first found out about him drinking the woman's beer, it was not because she told me this, but because I overheard them talking among themselves about it. I had to ask them about it before I found out about any of this. Once I pushed them, they started telling me about all of it.

Plus, I consider myself pretty good at reading people (those I date being notable exceptions, of course), and they seemed more bewildered and annoyed than spiteful.

            Hope that makes sense.

I can picture the Harvard Square bums trying to pull this shit on tourists, or college students. Some of them are pretty good at coming across as "artsy-musician" types to the uninitiated.

Mind you, there are some very respectable homeless people who at first glance might appear to fall into the "scuzzball" category, who would never DREAM of pulling this kind of crap because they have a little thing called "dignity".
I was not hired to respond to those voices.
