Maybe I'm confused, but if the customer is the one doing the writing, doesn't that essentially amount to them waiving their own privacy rights?
If the word HIPAA had not come up, I would be right there with you. Their labyrinthine system of regs would drive the most anal-retentive D&D rules lawyer batshit insane...er. They have this tendency to go overboard in the name of protecting privacy. They are doing it for a good reason, but some of their regs (like the one mentioned above) are effectively using an elephant gun to solve a problem that would better be handled by a lone sniper.

I'd be telling the customer point blank that you are confirming to make sure you aren't an accomplice to a criminal fraud and if she didn't like it, to go to another bank

Some people are just class in a glass. No matter how you try to help them, they just have to be pissed off about something.

You can't always trust that whole "only one person by that name in the system" thing. Had a member come in about his deposits not appearing in his account. He had a unique sounding name, so the drive thru teller just put the deposit into the one and only account that pulled up by his name. Unfortunately, in order to find this gentleman's (and he was, for once, a gentleman and NOT an SC about it) true account, we had to attach a Sr to the end of his name. When Jr had opened his own account, the suffix had gotten missed.

(Jr did apologize to his dad for spending the money. We had to pull his account negative to pay his dad back, and Jr brought his account back positive his next pay day.)

In my experience the people that make the biggest fuss about things like this are the ones who are trying to pull something. You did your job and you kept your cool throughout her abuse. So you rock! And she's a dumbass.
