That realization that you screwed up by not thinking ahead has got to be frustrating. Then, depending on the type of SC you are, you choose the response. Name dropping is my favorite. Outright bullying is a close second.

I recently had a lady say to me "If i were your mother you wouldn't be sold out." No, if you were my mother you wouldn't be staying at a damn hotel.

Truth Hurts is exactly right, plan ahead or deal with it.

just put em in the boiler room!
what? they're getting a room! it just doesn't have a bed, bathroom etc etc...
That reminds me of a Simpsons episode where Homer and Marge went to one o those "theme room" hotels for couples. They somehow ended up in a "janitor's closet." Homer told Marge he could be the janitor and she could be the janitor's wife... until they found out it actually was a janitor's closet.

      Sigh... just thought I'd share

as if we dont want more business.... also. they think they can keep bitching and bitching about it. and they will get what they want. I cant magically create a room...... but then they think we can
I know! Your buisness is to sell rooms. If you are telling someone you have no more rooms when in fact you do have 10 empty, unreserved ones, that is money you or your company is losing. Which is no way to stay in buisness. Why do they think we're lying to them or just being lazy?

i dont know where those people get the idea of us holding back the rooms....
we sold out.. then we sold out.... im sure the GM would be more than happy to see all the rooms were sold.
one time our hotel had 2 reservations left (if those 2 came, we would have to walk'em) the hotel was totally booked and checked in... good thing though. those 2 reservations never showed up. but my manager and i were on our toes the whole night looking for rooms from other hotels in our area just incase we needed to walk'em

I tried not to talk to people w/o reservations when we were sold out. Talking merely gets you into trouble. I just gestured at the "no vacancy" sign on the desk. They try to say something, I gesture, point. Say something, point. Zeppo Marx is my hero.

One time I stopped by Mrs. Rudes hotel when she was the duty manager & heard some f**kchop blasting the front desk agents, then ask for the manager....You guessed it, he tried to lay into my wife while I was standing right there. That didn't go on for longer than 10 seconds. I didn't do or say anything threatening, but I did ask him if he'd like it if I talked to his wife in that manner, to which he replied "Uhh...no". I then asked him to not do the same to my wife

              Then I stood there...smiled...And watched.

He got quite polite right about then.

Or those who accuse you of discrimination against them for some sort of stupid reason.
Just like the race card. "You're charging me more because I'm black/purple/short/tall/fat/ugly/etc."
My response: "You are? I couldn't tell, I'm colorblind." (Not true. Although, I think my left eye is a bit...)

We used to put signs on the door saying NO VACANCY just to cut down on the sheer number of people who would come in.

The number of people who came in and asked if we were really sold out was kind of astonishing sometimes.

I didn't mind so much when people would come in and ask if we knew if anyone else had rooms, but the people who would get all mad used to drive me crazy!

Oh, and another thing.....when you are planning a wedding it might be a good idea to plan ahead when choosing your date, at least if you will have a lot of out of towners coming. People used to get so mad that rates were higher for the weekend of their precious wedding.

Well, fucknut, don't plan your wedding for Columbus Day Weekend when the leaf peepers are here in force, or college graduation, etc. It isn't that hard to look into these things!

And this is why you really should call in refills a few days early. Believe it or not, we run out of stuff sometimes. And if it's something that I can't get in immediately because it's an item that either takes 3 to 5 business days for me to get in, or it's on backorder, you're kind of SOL until it comes or I can find it at another store.

I always enjoy it when you tell them you're sold out and they ask "WHY?!?!"

Because it's tourist season. That's why we're sold out. Alternately, because it's tourist season -- that's why the rates are so high.

Usually they follow this with what has become my alltime favorite question ever to be asked as a hotel clerk. I get it dozens of times each tourist season and the consistency with which they ask this question is amazing. No matter how many times I see it, I'm always astounded. They get this look on their face as though I am something they just stepped in, sneer, and ask with a remarkably consistent nasal whine, "Tourist season?! What's there to see around here?"

begs the question of what they're doing there then, doesn't it?
