Thank you to all of the veterans that are on this board.

As for the guy complaining about having to wait for dinner because of all "those people", I wonder how he would feel having to order in German, Russian or heaven forbid....English. As for what they did, well it takes a special person to put himself in harm's way so that others may live in peace or work for long hours with low pay. I never served in the military but I do appreciate those that did.

Around here, a bunch of places are offering FREE meals but you have to show military ID to get it. They're not going to take your word for it if you're a veteran.
Insisting on getting a FREE meal cause you're a veteran is like insisting on getting a military discount cause you're in the the military. A true person of the military isn't going to insist on getting something free cause of their military affliation & if they do then they're a discredit to everything the military stands for.
After having worked at a bowling center that was on a military base for about 3.5 years I have to point out that yes some will, and some spouses do.

And about discounts... Do you really think a place that only serves military members and their families has a military discount?

I was asked that usually at least once a day.

I do have to clarify that most were great to be around, but you still do get some of those type around.

        This.

        A thousand times this.

For all those who have taken the risk of ending up under a poppy field in France.
For all those who risked being forced to build a bridge over the river Kwai.
For all those who opened the gates to a camp, only to discover thousands of starved, forced labour prisoners who needed urgent food, shelter and medical care.
For all those who stayed behind the front lines and ensured those who were there had food, shelter and medical care.
For all who protect the rest of us...

        ... thank you.

And may we never again have the horror of the trenches of world war one.
May we never again have the horror of chemical weapons. Biological weapons. Nuclear weapons.
May we never again place land mines.
May we never again mistreat prisoners.
May we become humane, not just human.

        Lest we forget.
        Seshat's self-help guide:
        1. Would you rather be right, or get the result you want?
        2. If you're consistently getting results you don't want, change what you do.
        3. Deal with the situation you have now, however it occurred.
        4. Accept the consequences of your decisions.

Oh I would have lost it then.
I would have too. My grandfather served in WWII, and refused to talk about any of his experiences until the day he died.

My mom was an Army nurse who took care of the Marines who were bombed in Beirut. She refuses to discuss anything she's been through, besides, "I can't believe what people do to other people".

Millions of Americans gave their lives so those 2 could be ignorant fucking entitlement whores, and many millions more gave their healthy years, and their mental sanity so that they could be lazy, ignorant, useless people, and I'd have outright told them such. >:-O

To all those who have served and are serving currently, you have my thanks. We'd be speaking German if it weren't for you.

my grandfather was also a WWII vet. The only person he ever talked to about was my cousin who also joined the navy.
They would go in my grandpa's office and just talk for hrs.

Ever time my cousin would just say that we have no idea what that man did for his country.

Well when he was dieing we learned alot. Lets say i had no idea my grandfather knew diff langages
i think we learned secrets that we shouldnt know

While I certainly do respect most people in the armed forces, there are some who push the EWing way too much...

The other night I went with some friends to pick up a couple copies of some video game they preordered and when we got there, friend who was in the army decides to park in the handicap spot even though he is obviously not handicapped. His excuse? "I was wounded in Iraq so I'd like to see someone try to question me!"

Yes, he got a purple heart, but he isn't in the least bit handicapped, and granted, it was midnight, but all the same, what is someone who truly was handicapped showed up and needed the spot?

I knew that was going to happen. Alot of freeloaders trying to pass themselves off as military just to get the free meal. That is incredibly low...how do they sleep at night knowing they're that rotten?
Stores aren't required to give the discount...some did and more power to them. Those that didn't are just as american as those that do. I know I'm stating the obvious here...but EWs don't know that. Those jerkwads throwing around the word taliban should'nt use words like that until they know what they mean.

Hate to say it, but being a freak about getting free stuff sounds really American to me. Or maybe it's...I dunno, just about being a jerk. What snaps in their minds?

Once I had a concession stand, and the heat went off in the theatre. My manager said we had to give away free coffee and cocoa. THAT WASN'T ALLOWED IN THE THEATRE.

I was mobbed, my volunteers burned their hands, we ran out of hot water pots three times, the fresh coffee "was too hot" and eleventy billion half drunk cups of coffee were tossed in the trash cans. And children were stuffing their pockets with cocoa packets.

I told my boss, "Never again."

"when you go home, tell them of us and say, for your tomorrow, we gave our today." remembrance day. never forget. ♥

My 16yr old daughter learned this little saying in school on Wed, from a power point presentation they were playing during a minute of silence. She told me it really made her think of what all of the veterans and active members went through.

I myself, like several others here, am not a veteran but have the utmost respect for those who have stood and fought for their country. I myself wear a "help for heroes" band around my wrist in support for my friend who is currently on the front lines piecing back together wounded soldiers whilst under fire himself.

however the sheer gall of people to try ant take advantage of something that is offered as a gift...

Well, this gimp with a handicapped tag would pick up her cell phone, and call the police.

My dad never bothered asking for anything free on veterans day or memorial day. But then again, he didn't have to prove anything - see, there was this silver star that he got on a bridge over the Rhine, in the Rhineland-Palatinate back in March 1945 ... and then a couple of bronzes shortly thereafter ... and other bling that he got for not playing nicely with the other children. And the 30 years of uniforms, crappy pay, and moving around, 1 war and 2 police actions.

It's easy to make that mistake. Note the similarities:

                            -Employees explode without warning
                            -Anthrax mayonnaise
-Beheading behind the counter every now and again.

Ditto. And I have the military background to really drive it home to him that being a self-entitled git isn't one of the privileges accorded to him as a Purple Heart recipient.

My husband is a veteran. We were out to dinner at a place that was offering free meals to vets. Let me tell you the place was packed we waited for over an hr.

the place was very good at getting people in and out the fast that they can. Very good staff.

About half way through our meal a guy came in. We were pretty close to the check in area.

The very nice guy manning the area told the guy it would be about 1hr wait. The customer went off. He wasnt a vet and didnt think he should have to wait behind "these people"

He demanded that the next place that was empty would be for him and his family. Just than his wife came in and couldnt understand why they had to wait they were not here to get a free meal.

Than she yelled something along the lines that "these people dont have real jobs" and "what did they do sooo special"

A older man stood up and told his story abouy WWII. (had me in tears)

than about 3 -4 other people told stories until these people stormed out.
Oh, HELL no. I would've gone off like a...well, like a bomb (sorry for the image, veterans). I'm not a veteran. My dad was, my grandfathers, several uncles, all served in WWI or WWII. But even if they hadn't....good god, how can someone even ask a question like that??

Geez, don't like the wait, go somewhere else.
When you start at zero, everything's progress.
