  • There's always one....

We played at Molly's tonite & on Wednesdays we don't expect a big crowd, thought there were more people than last month.

We & the other bands play for tips, drinks & dinner & while that doesn't sound like much, everybody knows the drill & we have in the past done quite well.

So during 1st set one of our fans (Eunice the Bearded Lady...I'm not kidding) took the tip jar around & The One Guy told her to tell us "I'm not gonna tip 'em,they're too loud"

I've played there for 15 years now I know damn well when it's too loud & the bartenders & waitresses have no qualms about tellin' bands they're too loud.Add to that the fact that nobody else complained & we have the typical "I want the band to sound like the stereo in my living room" SC.Hey asshat, you came to a fuckin' bar that has a fuckin' band that's gonna be playin' rock, country, blues or some combination of those & you expect quiet???

But he left before we finished the set & everybody else stayed & enjoyed it,including the people that came in later. And like I said, nobody complained about the volume.

Local mexican restaurant serves great food, but seems to have a live band on random nights. And the band is always LOUD. Can't hear, much less enjoy, a conversation with my family. And since this is normally a family restaurant, the place is half empty with all the high chairs stacked off in the corner on these nights.

The wait staff seems to understand, and they always apologise when I walk in with my kids, hear the music, and politely tell them why I'm leaving. I'd imagine that they aren't too happy that half of the tables are empty...

There is however a difference between a family restaurant that stupidly has live music randomly, instead of a set day so those that might actually want to hear it can plan to (and other can plan to stay away) and a BAR that ADVERTISES that they have live music. When you walk into a bar it is already loud. As you get later in the evening it can even get rowdy. (in my experience, I freely acknowledge that there could be such a thing as a quiet bar. never been in one or hear of one, but they could exist). Live music almost always sounds louder than a juke box. Even when it isn't. Don't go to a bar if you want quiet.
