    Travel agent hat on:

The law went into effect in Jun of 2009. A passport is required for entry into Canada, the Caribbean and Mexico.

    /Travel agent hat off

Yes, I still get berated by fully grown adults who booked flights and claim they weren't told they needed this documentation to enter Canada.

Yep. The 'accept no personal responsibility' rule for SC's is still FULLY alive and well, and seems to be gaining momentum every day.

That's not true anymore. When the US started cracking down on flights and border crossing with Homeland Security, although it took many years to implement on the Canadian border, the US finally made it a requirement that Canadians coming into the US would now Require a passport to do so. In accordance, Canada made a similar requirement that any American wanting to come north would be required to carry a passport as well.

There are some exceptions though, where driver's licenses especially tailored to meet certain criteria for cross border travel, will suffice in place of a passport.
Not entirely true. For Americans coming into Canada from the US, you may need a passport. (I'm not aware of the laws for that fully)

For Canadians coming into Canada from the US, you just need some form of picture ID. (Regular license will suffice). I know this from personal experience, having crossed back home and they didn't even take our passports to look at. (Granted we are 'locals' too)

There's an enhanced driver ID you can use, I believe. I live very near the border with Canada (an uncle used to have a cottage there. It never seemed like a foreign country to me then). I know you can't just drive over anymore without the right documentation. This guy must have been visiting from outer space!
There are alternatives to passports, such as an Enhanced Driver's License or a Nexus pass, but those are geared more towards people who regularly commute across the border. For the average traveler, easy simple answer is you need a passport.

It sounds to me like the SC was looking to partake of more of BC's greatest cash crop (illegal version)...

It also sounds like he's already had a little too much.

I used to go to Canada to get my takeout. In fact, I got a passport just so I could do that very thing. I thought it was just another hassle when they made us do it but I understand national security and I don't really give a damn. I get my take out anyway. This has been around for awhile now and I really don't see any problem with it. I actually like it better because there are less ignorant Americans at my fave Chinese place now. (Not that there aren't ignorant people, just less ignorant Americans.)

              holy crap. yeah.

i don't have a passport, but i do have the enhanced NY driver's license.
it took at least a month to get it too. and i had to have oh let's see...

birth certificate, ssn card (or w2), lease, some unopened mail, utility bills, bank statement. can't remember what else. oh and i almost didn't get it cos, on the phone the DMV rep said the receipt for the ssn card was valid to use, but the man at the DMV said no. thankfully i had my w2 in the car.

I had to also mention to every client that a DUI meant you couldn't enter Canada unless you had a "president's letter" and would they need /like info on how to get one.

Passport cards are also acceptable. Theyre good for land travel and cruises but you cant use them for international flights. Theyre half the cost of passports.

But seriously.."Pass thingy"? Where the hell has this guy been living for the past 30 years?

As a Canadian, I think it's fair to say that it's fine if this fellow stays on his own side of the border, as we can live without him, thanks.
I was just gonna say that. SC is too stupid to understand basic concepts, then he doesn't deserve to visit another country. A big win for Canada. Another thing...we in the U.S. don't want him either.

When I lived in Buffalo, the nearest kosher pizza joint was in Toronto. That's 115 miles one way. Of course you didn't just go for one slice, you got six or seven pies and distributed them around the neighborhood.

(Used to hit three countries in one day: on the way back I generally stopped in the Tuscarora Nation to fill up on tax-free fuel.)

Funny how distances shrink. When I was a youngster, I went to summer camp in the Poconos. (Hated it.) It was like going to the other end of the earth. Then I grew up and moved to Buffalo. Now when I drive through there, I say "Oh, East Stroudsburgh. Almost home." I mean, I thought nothing of driving 110 miles to ride a train from noplace to noplace and back again, and then driving 110 milees back home.

wasn't it about ten years ago you didn't need a passport to go between Canada and the US? when I went to Vancouver in 2000 I didn't have a passport.
Yes, until just a few years ago, a passport wasn't needed between Canada and the US, we were in fact the only two countries in the world with such an open border. Even now Canadians can travel to the US without a passport if they have an upgraded driver's licence.

But US/Canada is an exception to the rule, a passport is needed to travel between any 2 countries in the world, thought that would be a no brainer.

Should have told him that only terrorists don't have passports.

...except within the EU... but then again, if he came from an EU country he would have needed a passport - sorry, passthingy - to get in the USA... unless he was smuggled in!
