Back on topic (somewhat), I still don't know why some companies are cheap bastards when it comes to salt or even safety equipment. Sure, it may save a few dollars in the short run, but if someone gets seriously hurt...is the long-term cash drain really worth it?
They never think that far ahead. So many folks are stuck in the "penny wise and pound foolish" mindset it's not funny. And when that mindset affects other people, it can be disastrous.
I don't have an attitude problem. You have a perception problem.

Exactly, penny wise and pound foolish. My advice: Osha, Osha, Osha! And the labor board, too.
Customers should always be served . . . to the nearest great white.

Sounds like this "customer" didn't have the money to rent a truck anyway. And it's your fault her cards were declined? What a stupid bitch.

What she should have done was asked if you were ok, offered to get you ice, asked if there were a boss she could fetch for you. Someone gets hurt and my needs become secondary. That's being a decent human being. She's apparently not one.
That reminds me of a time my mom was sick at a store. We got outside and she was vomiting at a trash can and I was holding her up. A woman and her husband come up and tells me I should get her some ice and wrap the ice in a handkerchief and put it on her forehead. Iwas thinking, "um, don't you see me holding her up? Most people who offer help will offer to get the ice for me or just bring me ice."
Time! Time! Time is what turns kittens into cats.

Don't teach me a lesson; all I learn is that you are an asshole.

            To the OP:
I feel your pain, I really do. I'm an Assistant Manager for the same company. My co-workers here are awesome, but the stupidity and suckiness of customers never ceases to amaze us. I have a bunch of stories that I hope to post in the quiet winter months here.

Man, I can't stress how much I agree with the rest of the posters on here. Document everything, go to HR, file a workman's comp claim and last but not least, find a job that'll treat you better. I can't believe how big of a jerk your boss was to leave you high and dry and your co-worker for not helping you out and backing you up with that SC!

I'm still trying to wrap my mind around the concept of saving the salt. That's like telling people not to use the toilet paper because you don't want to buy more, and it just gets wasted if you flush it away.
It's more like not taking your high blood pressure or high cholesterol medications because you haven't had a heart attack YET. Not using t.p. is a lot less dangerous than not salting/sanding icy roads.
Everything will be ok in the end. If it's not ok, it's not the end.

I hope your ankle heals quickly and things get better for you and/or you find a better opportunity.

Pretty much everything that I was about to say already has been said...

Call OSHA regarding management's decision not to provide salt.

Call the Labor Board regarding management's decision to make you work 6.5 hours without a break.

Fight the company for Workman's Comp.

The poor excuse of humanity that tried to defraud the company out of a truck isn't a customer and doesn't deserve anything.

A real customer would have handed over the appropriate currency in exchange for the privilege to rent the truck.

Your coworkers don't know the difference and really don't deserve to work there.

Your management is incompetent because they don't know OSHA safety guidelines and therefore don't deserve to work there. Ignorance is not an excuse.

                  My $0.02.

So update from me. Ankle is doing significantly better. I'm walking without crutches again and only needing to wear an ace bandage. The customer and apparently my coworker filed complaints against me because I swore. I one upped them, I had a customer that I'm on really good terms with. I had his business card, he called up the 1800 number for me and said many good things. I got a call from my manager saying how happy the customer was and my customer also complained about my manager. I'm visiting a worker's comp doctor tommorrow for my ankle to get the additional amount of time out of worker's comp. Nobody has denied my claim yet.

Not to be too vicious or anything, but that's one coworker to throw under the bus at every opportunity now.
