  • No discount = racism?

I work in a pharmacy inside a large store. We got a new technician about three weeks ago maybe? Where I work, prescriptions must be scanned out of the pharmacy system before they are scanned at a register. When they are scanned out of the pharmacy system (TASCO), the employee doing the transaction must scan his or her badge. Just about everything you do in the pharmacy requires you to scan your badge so there are records of who has done what with a prescription from the time it is dropped off til it is paid for.

Today the new technician was working the register and got a customer who had no prescription but wanted to purchase a plate of food. My pharmacy allows this, for whatever reason. So she scans his food and he tells her to go on ahead and scan her discount too. Her employee discount. He wants her to give him HER employee discount on the food. Let's see why this won't work. number one, HE is not an employee!! Number two, she doesn't even have a discount card. You have to work at my store three months before receiving one. Number three, we don't even get discounts on deli food!
So she tells him it is not possible for her to give him a discount. The next customer comes to get a prescription and new tech scans it at the pharmacy system and scans her badge. From sucktomer's view, scanning badge = giving discount.

SC: "Oh, so you just won't do it for a (race) man. That's messed up. You're a racist bitch, you piece of shit. I hope you rot in hell!! And I mean that!!"

I WISH I had known what was going on before sucktomer launched his tirade because I could've said something. I WOULD'VE said something. But I don't know newtech and first-instinct-without-thought question was 'did she do something wrong'? But sucktomer left and I thought about everything for maybe 10 seconds before writing the sucktomer off as an idiot.

I told new tech not to worry about it, that the customer was an idiot, etc. Her next customer was the same race as the sucktomer. He told her not to be upset because that's what the sucktomer wanted and that he wasn't worth it. He was a nice older gentleman and even bought new tech flowers to cheer her up!!

The thing that pisses me off about all of this is that we are in an area where the vast majority of customers and employees are the sucktomer's race. Perfect place to work if you hate (race), huh? I don't think the sucktomer thought the newtech was racist. It was just the immature last resort move of a jackass.

I apologize if this seems like a bunch of jumbled up sentences. I'm very tired.

At my store the cards used for POS savings AKA "loyalty card" such as discounts, sales, rewards, etc (for both customers and employees) are the same. I'm assuming they have a flag in the DB that they can set on card numbers to give the employee discount only to employees. Cards used for administrative POS stuff are totally separate from the "loyalty card."

Even if this is not the case in your store, the SC was a total b***h.

Oh my word. Consumers will say anything to get their way. Only cats have the right to be this entitled.
Customers should always be served . . . to the nearest great white.

Remember, this is SC logic we're talking about here. When an SC is of a different racial background than a store employee, some form of race card will be deployed.

See Mr Hero's thread for when the SC is white and the employee is black.

Good grief, the race card starts to get a bit tiresome, doesn't it?

I've had a number of customers ask for my employee discount and about half of them were pretty serious. Besides the fact that I don't even use it for family because it will get me fired, the computer has a record of who checked out the transaction. My checking out my own discount will flag LP faster than anything. And yes, the company DOES check such things. Of course, covering your own ass earns you the entitlement card of the day as well.
A lion however, will only devour your corpse, whereas an SC is not sated until they have destroyed your soul. (Quote per infinitemonkies)

You don't even have to be of a different race. We've had plenty of stories where some EW didn't get their way and whipped out the race card, even when the person not giving in was the same race. Of course, at that point, they'll usually throw in the "traitor" gambit, too.

racism, i don't think he knows what it means.

anyhoo, he was being pissy about not getting his way, like everyone said.

He was a nice older gentleman and even bought new tech flowers to cheer her up!!
that is so sweet. people like him are the reason why we keep going, because there is good in humanity (occasionally).

You are forgetting all the threads where both the SC and the poster are the same race and the race card gets thrown into play.

Those baffle the shit out of me.

Not me, cause SC's will use whatever they think will work and the heck with making sense.

And, of course, scanning her badge actually had nothing to do with a discount anyway. The customer was in his own little world, and anything that didn't fit into it was rejected.

It takes several minutes to convince some EWs that we don't even get employee discounts at my job. They assume that we would, since it's a big box store. But you know, I don't really shop there THAT often, so I think I'll keep the perks I've got instead. Yay holiday pay!

I think it's only tiresome because we don't take advantage of it ourselves.

So that's it! No more Mr. Nice Jester. From now on, if they don't give me every discount, possible or not, it's because they don't like Russians. Or Romanians. Or the Polish. Or Jews. Or Americans. Or short guys with curly hair. Yada yada.

I don't get it that often, and people are usually joking, but I have a very simple way to cut them off at the knees for this. (The following is an amalgamation of various conversations I've had with customers along these lines...)

SC: "Hey, can I get the employee discount on that?"
JESTER: "But you don't work here."
SC: "I know that. I meant your employee discount."
                          JESTER: "Um....no."
SC: "Come on, I won't tell anyone."
JESTER: "I have no doubt, but I have grown rather attached to having a job and paying rent, thank you very much."
SC: "Isn't there anything you can do?"
JESTER: "Actually, there is one way you can get the employee discount."
                          SC: "Really? How?"
                          JESTER: "Get a JOB here!"
                          SC: [crickets]

But even if you did, it's foremployees, not customers!
