I'm always nice to the receptionists. I remember in the days when I was looking for work where they said to be nice to the receptionist because you never which interviewers ask the receptionist about you.

As for the debt collector....they're right when he's harassing you, he's crossed a line.

His lapse in debt may be recent on an account that was opened when he still had my phone number.
It's also possible that they're using historical records in the hopes of tracking the debtor down. We get that semi-regularly with someone who used to have our number every time the debt gets sold to a new firm.

Or they're using the number still. I've just started getting random collection notices in the mail for people that haven't lived here in the 9 years we have, or in the 5 years the person who we bought from. I think someone is either using our address because they picked it out of a phone book, or it's been like 20 years or so since they lived here.

turned out the two collectors calling my house weren't even for me...one was for someone I didn't even know and the other was for my EX bf..so I gave them his cell number so they can bother him directly

There was a time when I had collectors calling ME at work and I told them repeatedly to NOT call me there and they still did it anyway. It didn't stop them.

Now I have what sounds like two collectors calling me at home when I have everything in a debt consolidation plan. And I have been hounded by two seperate collection agencies over a debt that went to a mediation and that got DISMISSED!! I no longer owe and had to tell two companies that and send them the court documents.

              Fuck.
If debt collectors continue to call you when you have told them not to, they are violating the law. It's a major fine: $10,000 per occurrence IIRC.

When I tell a debt collector to stop calling me I say, "As per FTC regulations, you are to communicate with me only in writing, no phone calls." If the case involves a debt I don't owe (I've had this happen several times, because of the way debts get sold and resold), I tell them, "By law, you are required to provide me with documentation that you own a debt I owe, what the debt is, how much I owe, and how and when the debt occured. You must provide this within 30 days. If you do not, I will refuse to pay and file a complaint with the FTC if you continue collections actions."

              Never fails.

I've had that happen, too. I got harassing phone calls for FIVE years all for the same person, regarding debts. I also got calls from the school system regarding her truant son (every single day . . . the kid NEVER went to school). The lady owed money all over town . . . I talked to many different collections agents about many different accounts. To their credit, when I explained they had the wrong number, most were good about stopping the calls. The few jerks who crossed the line quickly backed down when I invoked the FTC. I only had to file one complaint.
They say that God only gives us what we can handle. Apparently, God thinks I'm a bad ass.

I had to change my phone number once because of that. Once when I first moved into an apartment I got a lot of calls for some girl who lived there before me. I had to have the phone company change the number a few days later because I would get home and my answering machine would be full of messages and I would get calls all evening.

I would tell them that I don't know the woman and have no idea where to find her. They acted like I was lying. I know she must have been in a lot of trouble because the police showed up at my door looking for her a few weeks after I moved in. At least they didn't keep coming back once I explained that I had recently moved in and was a new tenant.
