  • No. No. How about no? No? NO!!! (long)

So I redid my website a couple days ago with this really new, sleek look, and as a way to get people to both look at it and drum up some sales....I announced a small sale on some of the templates I have. Considering most are still really cheap, it wasn't a *huge* discount, but it was a good deal.

Apparently that is not enough for this guy. Since the hour I relaunched, this has been what he's done. Long copypasta to follow:

    Client: hi
    Client: ?
    Client: you there?
    Client: hllo?
    Client: hello?
    Client: you there?
    Client: ?
    Client: ??
    Client: ????????????
    Client: ??

Seraph: Hello, I am here....please don't spam me so many times within a single minute. If I don't respond immediately, its most likely because I am with another customer.

    Client: hi
    Client: ?
Client: oh, i thought you were gone.
    Client: please help me
    Client: please

    Seraph: ?

Client: I need a design andcoding to my site <link redacted>
    Client: please help me
Client: i have 50$ as my budget

    Seraph: Sorry, I really can't =/

    Client: :-(
Clientl: do you know anyone who knows both designing and coding?
    Client: Designing is very hard

    Seraph: Yeah it is

Client: can you atleast make a custom design for me my budget is $40

Seraph: First off, I cannot work for anything below the prices listed. Secondly, you said earlier it was a budget of $50?...

Client: i dont have a lot
Client: i will give 70$ for template and implementing it to <script>

    Seraph: Sorry, no.

Client: can you make a simple just a simple
Client: like the first one in your portfolio

Seraph: I really can't, but you could check out the premades on my site right now, as they are on sale.

Client: but they can be sold to others to
Client: so it won't be unique

Seraph: Yes, thats why they are very low priced.

Client: so i buy premade, and change all the colors on it, and add my own stuff.

Seraph: Um, no. The license conditions of the template, which are listed on that page right there, state that while you may make some modifications, you cannot take the base template, and pretty much make a brand *new* template out of it. If you want a custom design, then you may purchase one of those.

    Client: please
    Client: thats not fair
Client: please you are so talented
    Client: you can do it
    Client: no charge

Seraph: Very much no, that entails a lot of work to recolor so many elements, it would definitely be a fee to change that, as stated on the website.

    Client:
Client: so expensive, even to recolor a site you have fees

Seraph: Well...of course...it's extra work. I do not work for free, that is a bad business decision to do so. :P

    Client: atleast this
    Client: please
Client: Can i re-colour it and show it to you and then you agree on it
Client: so that there will be no problem? or no fees?????

Seraph: No, as I said, the current policy is listed on my site, and recoloring the entire template is not allowed. But, as stated....the fee is really very low, only $10. I know it may seem unfair, but due to problems in the past, we have had to stick by a strict policy of certain modifications not being allowed.

    Client: please
    Client: let me show you
Client: i will give $70 for custom design then

Seraph: I'm sorry, but I have explained everything, and I don't appreciate you telling me one minute how you know how hard it is to do this sort of thing, and then tell me that I must accept a third of what I work for. Goodbye. <logs off>

I mean, really? Its not like I didn't make things clear enough on my website, or explain them multiple times to him in the chat! Bad thing is, I've been warned by a friend of mine who runs a script company, that this same guy has been opening at least six support tickets with them a DAY. He's been asking for them to discount things big time too, and apparently his last support ticket said he was going to talk to me about a design again. >< So we may end up with another thread about him soon, lol

What a fruitcake. Even if he was prepared to pay your prices, it would probably be less hassle to tell him to get lost, because he'd just ask so many asinine questions that you'd waste hours and hours on him, and it simply wouldnt be worth your time.

Incidentally, how much does a decent website cost these days? I'm going to be looking to have one built soon, and I'd like an idea of ROUGHLY how much I should expect to pay. It would be very simple, probably no more than three or four pages.

Depends, honestly, on whether you want just a static site, one that's easily updateable, what kind of design....

Its one of those "too many factors to just randomly guess" things. XD

I smell a scammer. If you and your friend can somehow block this guy from contacting you at all, doing so may well be worth considering.

You get what you pay for. You want cheap, expect cheap.

Sounds like one of the dorks I see on CL posting about wanting a fancy website with <insert trendy Web 2.0 feature that only serves to annoy users> for $20.
