New York State is weird in this respect. It actually requires you to file a "sales tax return" and pay taxes on products bought out of state.
Pretty much all states have this as part of their tax law, actually. Most don't bother to enforce it because it would be a nightmare to go after.

But if you have a business, you better declare everything you buy or you may not have one for long.

Seriously, though, tax is due at point of delivery. If the point of delivery is in a state that charges tax, then just pay the damn tax and move on.

North Carolina just tried to force Amazon to release their sales records so that the State could go after residents who hadn't paid taxes on purchases.

      Amazon laughed at them.

13% sales tax, used to be 15%
You live in Ontario don't you? It's only 7% tax where I live now, seems like almost nothing when you come from the GST/PST(or whatever the heck they call it now) zone.

Here's how I would have responded to such a line when I still worked in retail.

            SC: "We're from Delaware!"
            J2K: "Hi, welcome to Virginia."

But, I rarely had to deal with much hostile sucktitude from customers when I was in retail because I'm a fairly big guy who just unconsciously emits a "do not piss me off" field.

                  Misadventure, that is.

Doesn't Walmart do tax exempt sales for customers from states without sales tax as a matter of company policy?. I know there's a button for it on every register.
