I actually set my default to be "invisible" when I first show up.

Being invisible defeats the only reason I even have an IM at all, which is to talk to customers who insist on doing business that way. Although frankly, it gives me enough problems of various sorts that I'm considering requiring e-mail only.

For me, the point is to be invisible until you're ready to "open for business", so to speak. You still get 2-second-online glomping, but at least you'll be prepared for it.

If I ever seriously get into selling hand made stuff (I have to see if I can seriously get my self to focus on making chain mail) I would probably be one of those people that flat out refuses to negotiate on prices.

Also, this is a good reason for having separate work and personal communication tools. I always make sure not to give my personal email out to people at work, they only get my work email.

As for the work/pleasure email I agree entrely.

I have 2 accounts myself, one is "nickname@provider.com" and the other is "lastname@provider.com", I use one for applying for jobs with and the other for mates. They both link to the same inbox, but i've set it up so that they get flagged differently. It's really useful

Gmail does something like this -- I have three email addys that all end up in my gmail Inbox (I have them filtered so I know from whence each one comes)...I think it's in Labs, but gmail allows you to "send as" those addresses, as well (it wont' work unless you have access to the REAL address in question).

Emails sent out this way show up as:

From: erickei@workaddress

"full name" in header/immediately following: From erickei@gmailaddress on behalf of eric@workaddress

(no, erickei at gmail dot com is not my address, so don't bother 8p)
