She probably have had success with this tactic before when she was talking to someone in person, and had just not thought (yes, I know, they don't) it through.
What baffles me is that anyone would take her seriously at all. If I saw someone in a mall, screaming that her phone is trying to kill her, I wouldn't be worried that she would actually be killed. It might make me doubt her sanity.
