I actually prefer the wire hangers. My grandmother taught me to decorate and pad them with essentially crocheting 2 different colors of yarn over the wire.
My grandmother did the same thing. I've got several that she made and gave me.

Wish I could remember how she made them. That would be a fun craft to teach my son.

Yes...yes, they do. Although most of my hangars are the nice heavy plastic or flocked ones; the offspring seems to just be wire. How does that happen?

          I have two answers:

          1) The wire ones are still young, and need to grow up.

          2) The fancy ones have had cosmetic surgery.

            NO WIRE HANGERS!!!

            *cough*

What was I saying? Oh, yes. I very rarely ask for the hangers. But, where I buy, it's always offered and it's usually just one.

Most of the time, I remove them too. I even point the scanner tags facing up. Retail much? :P

              Ask and ye shall receive.

Here is a web site that shows how to cover wire hangers with yarn. This is the way my grandmother taught me, but we used only a single color.

              Here's another web site.

A Google search for yarn covered hangers will yield several more web sites with instructions.

                Not mine.

Like I said in an older thread, I'm convinced that my hangers kill each other off while I'm sleeping. Could somebody here send me a couple of their breeders so that I can replenish my supply, please? Mine are starting to become endangered.

The hangers the swamp's clothes come on (from the manufacturer; hanging clothes are almost always pre-hung) are too big and bulky for my taste, and so I never ask to keep them.

We recycle all our unused hangers, save for a few we keep around for hanging returns. They go into a huge sack that is sent back to the DC when full.

See I have a perfectly reasonable explination...

While mine multiply, it's because I dry clean..and the blasted dry cleaner gives me a ton of wire hangers..

However, as some have said..their wires mysteriously vanish..I don't think hangers multiply..I think they migrate. Somebody loses hangers, somebody else thinks theirs is multiplying.

Something's wrong with my hangers. They don't breed.
Yours must be all one gender then.

Mine, OTOH, seem to be part male and part female 'cause anytime I put two empties in the closet, they multiply worse than rabbits.

I dread cleaning out the big building this summer after the office remodel is done . . . I've got a bunch stored out there already I had to clear out last year.

Shoot, I always seem to have an abundance of hangers. If I have no empty hangers in my closet, all I have to do is raid one of the other closets in the house. I'm perfectly willing to shop at thrift stores and rummage sales for nice clothes on the cheap. We also inherit a lot of hand-me-downs from family and friends.

My hangers don't multiple, but it's not for the lack of trying. Every time I go to get one I have to untangle them.
