The teacher was the one who took the call from the employee saying, "What do I do?"
What did she do? I guess the first step would be to call the police, the next may very well be to accept the firing gracefully.

I hope at least the fraud in the OP's story feel ashamed, but I don't have much hope.

      What did she do?
Well, the first thing she had to do was give the money back to the customer and write it off as a loss to the bank. Next, she would need to contact the neice (if possible) and try to get the money back from her. If the niece cannot be contacted, or refuses to give the money back, she would need to contact the police to file fraud charges and possibly work with a collections attorney to put the pressure on the niece to return the money. And, yes, the employee would likely be fired for costing the bank tens of thousands of dollars by not following procedure.

Of course, the reason the teacher told the story was to impress on us to always follow procedure and get the proper documentation for any transaction.

Not a bad prospect. I am not afraid. In the meantime, let me close my eyes and sense the beauty around me. And take that breath under the dark sky full of stars. Breathe in. Breathe out. That's all."

I've heard quite a few stories about people making up "death in the family" stories to get their way.
I worked with a guy who was perpetually out because his grandmother or aunt had died. It started getting a little crazy. We used to joke that we were glad that we weren't his aunt or grandmother because we surely would have died several times by now.

What an idiot. They could at least try to form a convincing lie and stick with it. But that would require forming a thought, and sadly most sc's aren't up for that.

I'm sorry, but I've reached my maximum allowable exposure to stupidity limit for the day. I'll have to get back to you tomorrow.

The post about the lady using the tornado to get free sandwiches reminded me of this gem from last week.

SC: I know I am behind on my bill but Ive been out of the office for quite awhile because my son died.
Me: I'm so sorry to hear of your loss ma'am.
SC: yeah so I was wondering if you can waive all my late fees.
Me: I can certainly waive one for a courtesy-
SC: there are 3. This one was charged on March 30, the day he died. I don’t want to look at that. He was in a car accident that day.
Me: well I am authorized to waive one but I can contact the local manager to see if we can make an exception.
SC: please do. I know it was past due before the 30th but I haven't been around since way before that because MY SON DIED OF CANCER AND HE WAS IN THE HOSPITAL FOR MONTHS.
Me: um...I thought you said he was in a car accident?
            SC: pause...and click
I think this SC was trying to channel Crp. Klinger from M*A*S*H.. he, over a period of time, had at least 15 family members dying, injured, or pregant
I'm lost without a paddle and headed up SH*T creek.

Wow...several other bereaved parents here. I'm sorry for all of your losses.

Well, I've been in this grief process for almost 7 years now, and I have yet to beat anyone...so I doubt I'd really do anything to that SC either. But I'd THINK about it...hey, I already did.
