  • You want me to do WHAT!?!?!?

This tale is from when I worked at 'The Orange Apron' Home Improvement store many many moons ago, but I still remember it as if it just happened....

    Me=
    SC=Who else?!?!?

It was a fairly quiet night and I was the only one in my dept. I was just walking back to my dept. from the breakroom, minding my own business, pretty calm. It was pretty quiet, as it was late-ish. The only thing you could hear was the store's mundane shopping music and a forklift (important) working in a nearby aisle.

As you might know, when a forklift is in an aisle, taking something off a high shelf, they tend to block off 3 aisles while the forklift does its business. They block off the aisle the vehicle is in, plus the aisles on each side, in case it accidently knocks something over into the next aisle. Ya know, for the customer and employee safety.

These aisles have BIG YELLOW GATES that say DO NOT ENTER on them....

    What do I see???

Two middle aged men TRYING TO HOP THEM WHILE THE FORKLIFT IS WORKING IN THE NEXT AISLE!

Me= Guys, you cannot do that. There is an extremely dangerous vehicle working in the next aisle. Thats why this space is blocked.
SC='Ignores what I just said' Oh good! Some help! 'Looks at me then looks at friend' Maybe SHE'LL risk her life so WE don't get KILLED!
    Me=

They were probably just kidding, but still.....Who the hell says that?

Me=I don't think so. Now please. Wait for the vehicle to clear out. THEN you can get your items.

I had to stand there and wait with them. I didn't trust them enough to just leave them by themselves. I can't remember what they bought, but yeah. It wasn't worth risking my life for. Ha.

"Your concern is touching, sir. Now GTFO."

Yeah, I know you couldn't say that, but it wouldn't it have been nice if you could?

Haha yea! I wish! If it had been my last day, I totally would have! Though, on my last day, I made up for it!

A really big and strong man told me, a small slim girl, to lift 15 20 lb stones onto his cart. I said "Actually, I have a back problem (which is true), so I cannot lift these by myself." He didn't say anything/offer to help. Just stood there. I walked off. At least I was able to get a strong male coworker to help him! Haha!

Probably not the nicest thing for me to do, but at least I did get him some other help!

I wouldn't kill myself trying to help a big, strong man lif big heavy things. Don't most guys have that masculinity complex where they can't let girls do a "man's job"?
Seriously, at my work, we have 35lb boxes of sauce I can lift no problem (kinda) but 3+ guys always come running to help me. I'm getting something from a high shelf? Enter manly men team of helpers. I'm putting things in the fridge? Can we hold that for you?

There's a whole world of lifting devices that exist precisely for situations like this.
              Seshat's self-help guide:
              1. Would you rather be right, or get the result you want?
              2. If you're consistently getting results you don't want, change what you do.
              3. Deal with the situation you have now, however it occurred.
              4. Accept the consequences of your decisions.
