Hi everyone. Thought I'd share a story with you about this "unruly customer" (clerks quote) we had one time while I was working at CVS, which, by the way, is one of the worst retails stores EVER to work in as its employees are treated like s--t and are brainwashed by the repeated music tracks playing over the speaker all day long.
Old lady comes into store with cane. I am on the floor stocking shelves with product when she approaches me and asks if she could use our bathroom. Now, store policy is that the bathroom, which is in the back in the loading area by the breakroom, is for EMPLOYEE USE ONLY. I politely explain this to her, and she proceeds to tell me that she is incontinent and she needs to use the bathroom RIGHT AWAY. Seeing how she is an old lady and was polite about it, I quickly get my manager and ask if it we could make an exception, explaining the situation and that the woman had said that she was incontinent. Manager reluctantly says OK. I walk the woman down the aisles to the back of the store, through the Stock room doors, and point to the ladies room for her. She walks over to the ladies room and goes inside.
Now, in a rare situation like this, (normally we rarely EVER let customers do this), I have to stand and wait in the stock room until she is finished and escort her out to the main floor area. It was a busy day and I was being called to ring upfront cause the lines were getting long.. So after 2 or 3 minutes an employee walked into the stockroom and I asked if they could just stay until the lady had finished using the bathroom. I then go upfront and ring customers.
The lady finishes, the employee walks her out, she doesnt buy anything, and she leaves the store.
Later on that day, my manager relayed this to me:
That the woman had COMPLETELY MISSED THE BOWL, that there was FECAL MATTER ALL OVER THE TOILET SEAT and toilet paper all over the floor, and that my manager nonetheless upon discovering this reluctantly had to clean it up.
THIS IS WHY WE DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT allow customers to use the Employees Only Bathroom.
but at the same time, if we had not let the woman use the bathroom, she may have very well shit her pants RIGHT there in the store by the register... and that would have been just as bad if not worse.
Not a "sucky customer" persay, but a customer who left a vile and disgusting mess in our bathroom and decided NOT to clean up her own mess.
Huh.
You know, having worked in retail for a good period of time, you can all agree on this one statement:
Just when you think you've had the most UNBELIEVABLE customer you've EVER had,
the next day you'll get one even MORE UNBELIEVABLE!!!
Just when you thought someone could NOT POSSIBLY BE THAT STUPID, you get another customer who is EVEN MORE STUPID THAN THAT!!!
Hey, Carlin said it best.....
Think of how stupid the average person is,... figure most people are even STUPIDER than that!
regards to all those out in retail hell,
Chris.
