A while ago, I had a "large bill early in the morning" type of customer, and when I asked if she had anything smaller, or would like to use a card, she snootily replied "THIS is what I'm giving you" I was very happy to give her back a fistful of coins, and when she complained I just parroted her own line back at her

Bigger question: In this day and age, why use cash?
Because my bank won't let me have a debit card until I'm 18.

If you're well-organised, cash can actually be quicker than a card. Some people also prefer it because it helps them be more organised.

That's annoying, but what confused me was... don't you start with a set amount of money in your register? Or was it just that the manager hadn't bothered to break any bills?

At my place we have this system called Safepay. It takes a bit longer than a regular cash drawer, but it's supposed to be a discouragement to robbers. We don't have any direct access to the money. It is split into two machines, one for coins and one for bills. We accept the bills and feed them to the machine behind the counter, and tell customers to drop their coins into the big hole on the machine up front. It counts them up, then dispenses the right change. It's a bit of a slow counter, but you can just drop a handful in at once and let it work for a little bit.

This does also add the trouble of refilling when change gets low. Very fun if there's a long line of people shopping 10 items or less, since you just have to wait. If they have more, I can sneak in some while they're being rung up, but ideally I like to have the register closed before refilling.

This also means it has a fairly high minimum amount in it at all times, since we allow a pretty high amount of cash withdrawal from debit.

We feel your pain. Could always suggest there's enough change in the til if she spends another 16.50.

Sounds like the manager just hadn't bothered to break any bills. My manager does the opposite, and it's really annoying. When we're short of small notes she'll leave us with coins, coins and more coins. At least if she'd be kind enough to leave notes we can have them changed to what we need at the nearest bank in less than 10 minutes. *Sigh*

"Sorry I can't give change on that, but there's an ATM just 10 feet away where you can withdraw a smaller bill..."

I had the other side of this the other day. i realised I only had a £20 and asked the local shop if they were ok if I used it. She said yes and I apologized for using such a big bill this early in the day whilst she was making my sandwich.

Then she checked me out and I gave her the £20. She then only gave me change from a £10. Luckily she was ok when I pointed that out and gave me the correct change.
I am so SO glad I was not present for this. There would have been an unpleasant duct tape incident. - Joi
