  • Chickens aren't majestic

Our grocery store and meat department are owned by separate people. The meat department owner carries exotic burgers (elk, ostrich, buffalo etc etc.)

This guy comes up to my counter looking pissed off, he demands to talk to the owner. I explain that owner isn't in and ask if there is anything I can do to help him. He proceeds to tell me that he is disgusted that we would sell elk and has been "shaking with rage" since he saw them.

I tell him that he will need to address this complaint to the meat department owner not the store owner as they are separate business. He storms back to the meat counter and begins to lecture the poor kid working there. The kid explains to him that the owner will be in in the morning.

That's not enough for the guy who demands that the offending elk be removed from the store. They were not meant for eating, it's disgusting. They go back and forth when the now fed up kid asks why he is not also offended that we are selling chicken, pork, and beef as they are animals too.

He tells kid that those are domesticated animals not wild like elks. Besides chickens aren't as "majestic" as elks. He catches sight of my co-worker coming out of the back and storms over to her asking if she is the owner of the store.

She hears his complaint and tells him the exact same thing that I told him. That the meat department is owned separately and that the store owner has no say in the matter.

He finally leaves complaining that the sight of the elk has ruined his appetite and that he is going to "ensure" that we don't carry it anymore.

Pff. What a moron. Elk are a kind of deer, so they fall under the classification of venison, and venison is certainly fine to eat. Now there are a few animals I won't eat, simply because of personal views-horse, cat, dog, veal, and bear among them-but that doesn't mean I'm going to jump on people who do eat them! I think it's disgusting to eat cat or dog, and I'm horrified by the idea that some people do, but that's their belief and you know what? Meat is meat. I could never eat a horse as I grew up in Texas and ride, so I simply don't view them as a food animal. I won't eat bear because they are my birth totem animals, and they hold a sort of spiritual meaning for me and to me it'd be somewhat akin to cannibalism, as stupid as that may sound. But elk? Dude, I love elk! It's delicious. And why didn't he complain about the other exotic meats, like buffalo and ostrich? This guy needs to get over himself. No one is going to stop eating something because one loser doesn't like the fact that people eat it. I don't like the fact that some people eat wolf meat, but that's not stopping anyone, now is it? The thought of touching horse meat makes me downright ill, but that isn't stopping anyone from chowing down.

    Who says chickens aren't majestic?

They're not just majestic, they're royalty!

He should visit China and check out some of the things they eat over there, although if he's okay with "domesticated" animals eating dog meat should be fine right?

I know of an elk ranch less than an hour's drive from my house,a former neighbor & still friend is the foreman of that ranch,I've been there.
They're raised for meat because they make a whole buncha money sellin' the meat to supermarkets,it really is low in cholesterol & fat...tastes real good too

My brain broke. No seriously. I mean we just had our Pepsi repair guy telling us the other days that his kids ate elk so much that when he put beef in front of them they didn't really want it, until they tried some good ol' corn fed beef that is. So yes, elk are hunted, and eaten, and apparently good. Get over it, asshole!

So cats and dogs are fine then?

My 13 year old daughter recently decided to go vegetarian, and won't eat any meat, except the elk she helped her dad hunt and kill last winter. She'll eat it because she says it's 'free range." I think she really likes to eat it because it's yummy!

Not sure how her mind works, but I probably wasn't any more logical at her age, so whatever.
