  • Tales of dumbass hotel guests

I have worked the night audit shift at various hotels for the last twenty years or so - I won't mention any of the names just in case. In most cases there is nobody from management on midnights so we are on our own when it comes to dealing with the suckiness. So, without further ado, here are just a few of my stories from over the years.

At one hotel I worked at we were hosting a convention of strange roll playing people. On Saturday night I was approached by a gentleman with the group who was mad because he was not allowed to purchase hot dogs in their courtesy suite - probably because it was not negotiated with our sales department. This dude went on a twenty minute tirade insisting that they were always allowed to do this and no mention of sales contracts on my part made him happy. He ended up leaving the hotel over hot dogs.

One night we were approached by a man who wanted to report his car stolen so we called our local police. The investigation on their part revealed that his car was parked in the back of our lot and there were bloodstains on the steering wheel. It came out that he had driven away drunk, crashed his car into the guardrail and came back to report it stolen - all to avoid dealing with the rental car company. He went to jail that night.

Another night a man came to the hotel and told the afternoon shift he was a top executive for the company having a holiday party in our banquet room. He proceeded to go to the bar and charge a 1000 bucks worth of alcohol to his room and then when I got suspicious and called the police he had no way of paying for the booze. He went to jail as well.

My favorite guests are the ones who come to the hotel on a sold out night and when told we have no rooms proceed to go into a twenty minute tirade about it - and then asks if President (insert current presidential name here) came to the hotel we would have a room for him. Uh yeah, we will build a room for the president or just maybe kick out someone else. No means no buddy.

Well, just a few anyway. I am sure I will post some more as they come to me.

I'm just curious about the first story - It sounds like he was upset because he couldn't charge a purchase to a room paid for by another party as that hadn't been authorized? Also, just wondering how him being part of a Role-Playing Group had anything to do with it. Was the whole group a problem, or just this guy?

I hope you realize the first image that popped in my head was some D&D players rolling people instead of dice down the halls to decide how a move works out.

Didn't that fool realize that the police would investigate? Was the arrest for filing a false police report or DUI? Or both?
I'm trying to see things from your point of view, but I can't get my head that far up my keister!

It's all in the context earl:

I think figgyx meant "strange, bun-playing people." Then the angst over a lack of hot dogs falls neatly into place.

Seriously figgyx, I don't know how you and the other night audit people do it. I thought I'd had oddballs at the overnights at the gym and convenience store, but you folks have topped anything I ever saw.

Yes, you would have a room for him. He and his staff would have been intelligent enough to book rooms in advance if they planned to stay there, and wouldn't show up if they hadn't.......dumbass guests

In my experience, both as a gamer and as convention staff dealing with large groups of visiting gamers, it's usually one or two individuals who cause the problems. The rest of the group they're with tend to be friendly, polite and apologetic for their associates' behaviour. There are, of course, the occasional group of asshole gamers, but fortunately they tend to be in the minority.

The group had a courtesy suite and in past cases in other hotels they would have food for sale to group members. They must not have contracted with the hotel for bringing in outside food for sale. The group was strange to say the least. The next night when I was off I was told a woman came down for the costume party wearing see through clothing - leaving nothing to the imagination. She got mad when security told her to put some clothes on.

He was not drunk when he reported it but was taken to jail for wasting the coppers time. He was arrested for filing a false police report.

Ohhhh, yeah; some people treat the games like a meat market, trying to pick-up a guy/girl. Some just don't get that, yeah, that handsome elf knight has the hots for the character you're playing, but in REAL life he's married with 2-kids We had a girl in our group wearing a gauzy robe with a thong and underwear underneath; she thought she was the most beautiful thing in town, but *shudders*... Certainly not an in-period costume; least not outside of a brothel!

Regarding the first incident since some people don't understand... the guest was a larper. Long version, he was a live action role player. There are lots of those in the world and they are often held in hotels because its easier to play in them since they have alot more room and different settings. Personally, I feel like larping goes beyond my comfort level. I love gaming, mind you, but larping makes it too personal.

Him taking it to that level is idiotic. He should have known that was not included.

Its not that he wanted to charge to a room that didn't belong to him. Some hotels have a specific room set aside for guests that pay certain prices or have certain privileges. Like politicians, movie stars, rich moguls, and the like. They will get bonuses in these courtesy rooms that regular people don't get. Its not a hotel room, its a courtesy room that provides things like free food and alcohol.

As for the rest, man that takes me back to the front desk. Wow.
