Ohmygod how dare you tell them the truth! What were you thinking??

I'm going to really go out on a limb here and ask a general question: Does anyone, anywhere, EVER find more of whatever the customer wants "in the back"? This crazy idea that there just has to be one in the back room had to get started somewhere....
Sometimes where I work, we do occasionally look in the back and find stuff. This is normally cuz we've had a delivery, but have been too rushed off our feet to put anything out. Also, we have a store cupboard for excess tobacco product, and it's worth taking a look out back if there's none on the shelves.

More to the point, yes one could be in the back and just not out yet, however I want to know where the asking every employee to check or check again because someone said no started.

Yeah, there's nothing inherently sucky with simply asking if there's more in the back. Especially during Christmas, we had a lot of backstock and if something sells really really quick, we can easily run out of floor stock in merely an hour, and nobody has replenished the shelf yet.

Customers become sucky once you say there isn't in the back (either because you've just checked or you simply know because you've checked before or you've done the shipment yourself) and they insist you check for them again because who knows? Maybe Santa came early and gave you more since you last checked.

        Fiancee: What?!
        Me: Nevermind.

Yeah; I hate that, too. If I say that there's none out back, then just what is the point in asking my collegue the exact same question?

We have a locator system that tells us if an item is in the backroom by scanning it or its shelf label, and if so where it is.

However, it is currently all kinds of fucked up.

Yeah, we will sometimes find what the customer wants in the back. But other times the system will tell us the item is in the back somewhere but we don't find it, because the last one has been taken but the shelf location wasn't deleted from the system.

More proof of why I like you. Any chance for a Harry Potter reference, yeah? You are full of win.
Thank you! I will remember that when my family looks at my Harry Potter collection and rolls their eyes ...

I run into items being in the back at our local Target a lot. If I cannot find the exact item I want, I will ask someone on the floor to help me - either they will find it in the back or the customer sevice desk will help me find it at a different location. 95% of the time, the item I want is 'in the back' (actually at our store, I think 'the back' is really to the side). It is one of the reasons why I shop there vs other similar stores that are closer to home. They are more likely to help me find the item I need.

Our stockers purposely keep some items in the back room because of ebayers and extreme couponers (particularly during the "back-to-school" sales). If an item is coming in that is supposed to be "THE" next big thing, they know the ebayers/collectors will be there as soon as the store opens to clear the shelves....the same thing with the couponers and items that are the "great deals". They will actually go onto a few of the "extreme couponing" websites to check and see what they are promoting and hold back some of those items if we only got a limited quantity because they've been known to wipe out our ENTIRE stock within a half-hour of opening!!!
