The best-designed sites have a script so that once you click, it is impossible to do so again until the work in the background is completed. And pretty much all of the rest do have those warnings not to click a dozen times.

Reminds me of when I was a computer programmer, working as contractor on programs for the Navy. My boss was a crusty old retired Navy Chief. We actually got in a trouble report to fix a program flaw, because if the user (navy crew) pushed a particular button twenty-some times in a row, the system would crash. My boss's response?
