I almost forgot about this one.
I was working the register until 4 ladies approached my register and the conversation went like this. One of the ladies was holding a clear bag full of clother. (keep in mind that this is a grocery store)

    SC: excuse me miss.
Me: how may I help you?
SC: could I leave this bag at your register and come back for it when I check out.

(we are not allowed to take anything or to hold anything for a customer that did not come from this place)

Me: I'm sorry mam, we cannot do that here.
SC: Let me just place it underneath your register.
*she tries to place it underneath until*
Me: mam we cannot hold anything or babysit your items underneath our registers.
SC: why not? I did it all the time. Are you new?
Me: We cannot hold on to your items because it the stores policy and a security issue and no, I'm not new.
SC: thats F*ck*d up! what am I supposed to do then?
Me: take the bag with you when you shop?
    SC: It's only clothes.
Me: Still I can't take it.

SC: whatever. *she walks to the next cashier and asks the same question*
*the other cashier CW(who is new) looks in my direction for an answer and I shook my head.*
CW: I'm sorry mam, but I can't take it either.
SC: That's B*llSh*t! *she finally take her items with her to shop at the store without another complaint*

Like I said We are not Your ClothesSitters.

gawd, why doesn't she just take her lazy butt back to her car and keep it there? PROBLEM SOLVED.

It's an understandable policy IMO. If anything were to happen to her stuff, I'm sure she'd bitch the loudest. Plus, you're not paid to be responsible for her stuff.

There are a couple of stores here that insist you leave any bags you bring in at the register. They don't want people walking around the store with bags that they could use to hide stuff they want to steal.

Ditto here. Every store here is like that, at least every one that I've shopped at.

Still, once you said she couldn't leave her stuff and that she should just take it with her, she should have just left it at that.

"It's just clothes"...that may have cost her a hundred dollars, that she'd throw the biggest shit fit in the world about should anything happen to them. No. You did the right thing. She can just carry her "just clothes" with her like the rest of the shoppers!

And if this had been that kind of store, what do you want to bet she'd have thrown a fit about having to check her bag?

Ha, ha. You have not watched too many court shows, have you? Somehow, it will turn out that all the clothes were designer-labelled and are worth hundreds of dollars - and let's not forget the fur coat that was also in the bag!

And this claim will be made despite a total lack of receipts and the fact that the person has been on welfare/social-assistance for the last ten (10) years. They will swear up and down that you lost thousands of dollars worth of stuff.

not everyone owns cars(statistically in the US 7 out of every 10 households own cars).

I myself at age 35 have never owned a car, don't even have a driver's license....
Honestly.... the image of that in my head made me go "AWESOME!"..... and then I remembered I am terribly strange.-Red dazes

Agreed, but if SC does not own a car, she ought to be used to the various rules and regs of different stores by now. I didn't own a car for about a decade and it never crossed my mind to ask store employees to "mind" my stuff for me. If I was getting overloaded ... that was a signal it was time to go home.

I tend to agree with earl colby pottinger, even if something didn't happen..what would keep her from saying "Hey I had a mink coat in here, and it is gone!"?

I wouldn't put it out of the remit that its filled with Walmart low quality stuff (or even your store stuff) and that they claim it was filled with designer high cost stuff and claim you swapped it over whilst looking after it.

                        Yeah, I'm jaded.
I am so SO glad I was not present for this. There would have been an unpleasant duct tape incident. - Joi

Exactly. Nope, not going to watch your stuff. Neit, Non, Negatory, Nein, Nie. Not going to happen in this life time.

Technically, at my drugstore (in a high poverty area), we're supposed to ask customers that come in with bags (be it a duffel bag, backpack, etc.) to leave it with the cashier. It's a loss prevention thing. I've been chewed out on a few occasions for not doing so. But I have the advantage of a couple security cameras that record my every move. Not that I'd touch someone else's stuff (other then when they hand it to me and I hand it back).

No, just realistic. Not saying this particular customer would've done that ... but it's not so improbable that it would never happen.
