  • You need to chill out

The customer had TWO onesies that was supposed to be together as a set but weren't set up that way when I was ringing them up. BOTH of them were in separate clothes hangers & were of 2 colors. One was red & the other was white.
So as I was ringing them up this is what ensued:
Customer(C)...whoa!!! That's supposed to be together!
ME(cashier)(M)...well, they both have separate tags on them
C....LOOK! It says on the tag that they're part of a set!
M...I look at the tags & I'm not sure if it's the way she says so I say..."I'm not sure So I'll have to get a CSM". That's when she starts raising her voice. So I put in "248 Action Code" to alert a CSM on their palm pilot that I need them.
C..."Where's the CSM???" I'm tired of waiting!!" Now only 5 minutes have passed & you have to understand that it was a busy day so at times it takes a while for a CSM to get to a register. She gets even nastier.
M...."Look, please don't yell at me. I'm trying to a get a CSM to take care of the problem".
C...."You don't need to tell me not to yell at you. You'd know if I started yelling at you".
M..."You know what? You need to chill out"
C..."Don't you DARE tell me to chill out. I've been through your register before & I have to put up with your crap again!"
M..."Then you know what to expect then!!"
By this time the CSM had arrived & I told her what was going on & showed her the onsies & she told me to just ring it as one item. So I did. So when I finished the transaction the idiot customer all but snatched the receipt from my hand & gave me a nasty look. Now usually I hold my tonge the best I can when I get a nasty customer BUT it was the last half hour of my shift & I was tired & not at my best.
You treat me like crap during the last hour or so during the day & I'm liable to snap at you....lol. TRUST ME...I'm not the only cashier who's turned the tables on a nasty customer.

Well, I'm actually surprised that while the manager was there she didn't make a complaint against you especially if you had been rude to her before.

I'm feeling that there was some SCness and some SEness in this story.

I admit that I was rude BUT when you have a customer get nasty to you then there's only so much that you can put up with. The CSM came up AFTER that lovely exchange with her royal bitchiness....lol.
      What would YOU have done?

I'd have just acted bored, but professional. You know what? She doesn't care who YOU are or who she's yelling at. She's just being a bitch. It's not PERSONAL. She doesn't dislike you in particular, she's probably that way with all employees. Sadly, you give her reason to when you respond like that.

Nah, BrightStar tried to deal with this reasonably but saying the CSM was coming to fix the problem and if the customer wants to act like complete ass after that BrightStar has a right to tell them what's what. Surprisingly cashiers are people with feelings not robots programmed to take whatever they are given. I'm all for cashiers asserting their human with feelings status.

I would note however that it could get you fired seeing as most store don't get a damn about their workers feeling an ultimately their mental health. Tollbaby's way of dealing with things is the way to go if you need to keep your job.

By the way studies have proven that people in customer service who just have to keep swallowing abuse have much poorer mental health. The customers and stores are assaulting us I say!

I agree that you shouldn't take their crap personally BUT that's awfully hard to do when you've just been yelled at for stupid stuff & you have a LONG line of people & somehow you're expected to just "get over it" & deal with the next person in line. For the most part, I do my job the best way I can but there are times you just want to grab a nasty customer by the throat & ask them.."what the hell is your problem???"
Most people would get on the defensive when yelled at by whoever but by being a cashier you somehow have to reign in that instinct. & that takes an awfull lot of energy.

Nice. This made me feel good.

But i'm surprised too that the SC didn't say anything to the manager about you. Maybe if she was too impatient to wait quietly for a manager, she didn;t have the time to mouth off about you. I think you dodged a bullet.\

You're right though, all she needed to do was chill out. People that get all worked up over a wait of a few minutes die of heart attacks at 35.

See, this is why I'm not "employable" any more. I don't put up with much and if someone is standing in front of me yelling and being insulting for something that isn't my fault I will point that fact out and tell them to either leave or become reasonable. No way will I take abuse from a customer and when we had employees, I felt they shouldn't either. I expect people to have respect and personal responsibility when they're out in public dealing with people.

I think I tend to expect too much.

At least they won't have to wait long

We are? I wish I'd known that when I was in the stores...

Seriously, though, I generally employed Tollbaby's bored professional approach, even though I was often shaking inside. Then I'd escape to the back the first chance I'd get to breathe.

well it sounds like this wasn't a 2 piece deal, but of course the manager caved and gave her what she wanted anyway. Which only encourages them to throw a hissy fit to get their way, which is most decidedly NOT a cool thing to do.
