If I were one of the photo company brass, I'd be more comfortable with a policy of "you can keep the comb or throw it out, but DON'T UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES give it back to us". After all, if you NEVER get a comb back, there's no chance of a used comb getting into the box of new combs that get given out.

With such a policy, blaming the photographer for a lice outbreak due to shared combs would make no more sense than blaming MallFart for an outbreak because some kid shared a comb that was bought there.
Any fool can piss on the floor. It takes a talented SC to shit on the ceiling.

Now that makes sense. Of course it depends on the customer making sense too.

And I guess combs must be an American thing.
      It makes sense.

I've always found the comb thing to be incredibly unsanitary. I realize that many kids mess up their hair and need to fix it before photos, but kids sharing and keeping those combs is just asking for a lice infestation. Most of the girls and some of the guys in my school carried a little hairbrush or comb of their own in their bag or purse for such an occasion.

Maybe an American thing? (I notice you're in Canada as well)
I do tend to chalk some things to being in Canada XD I just get interested in these kinds of differences for some odd reason, lol

We never got 'em, either. Which I can see in going through my old class pictures from grade school. Seemed to be quite a few bed heads there.
*snorts* Same here. My grade 6 grade photo has my hat snuggly on, but my little wispy baby hairs are all sticking out on the sides (imagine a halo effect with hair). I love the photo regardless since it represents me pretty well Tho from high school on, I made sure to check a mirror first haha.

I really doubt we were provided with combs or brushes when I was in school...then again when I was in school it was the days of the comb in the back pocket, even for girls

Is it me, or does it seem weird that people get that attached to ....... a comb?
It's not the comb they get attached to, it's the fact they got something for FREE!

They get attached to their freebie, their triumph over "Da man" (tm) who keeps insisting that there's no such thing as "something for nothing", and they will cherish it forever as one of the few times in life they will be able to beat the system and get away with it! And, if they get lice from it, they'll sue! and get millions of dollars! all for NOTHING, it'll be free money! just as free as the comb!

THATS why people go berserk when denied a handout, ANY handout, even if you were handing out free bags of disjointed body parts of indeterminate origin
