Not exactly SC's, since they're not customers, just vandals, but it really sucked nonetheless.

So today I got up around 2:30am, checked on Pippin (who was all "MOAR LETTUCE!"), dealt with a noise complaint at the motel (which was actually by me, since I could hear them two doors down), and was ready to go and get started on my paper route. And I was actually going to get started early for a change! Yesterday was kind of crap with that jerkoff (though I did get Pippin!), and I was still feeling a little pissed off about that, but today was a new day!

I get to the dropsite...early! And...that's, yeah, that's newspaper scattered all over the parking lot. And it's wet, since we had a storm this weekend. And...those are soggy bundles piled up on the sidewalk.

The guys from Pizza Time were just closing up at that hour. They came over and said they didn't see who did it, but they'd picked up as many bundles as they could and weren't sure who to call. I thanked them and called my DSM.

Me: "Yeah, this is bhskittykatt from [route]."
DSM: "Oh hi! I totally remember you!" (Note: I never see my DSM. When I need to order supplies, I leave her a voicemail, she leaves me a note when the supplies are ready, and maybe I see her every other month or so when I pick up said supplies, but otherwise that is the extent of our contact. Paper delivery is a lonely job like that.)
Me: "Hi. Yeah, I have bad news. The drop site on 32nd street is a catastrophe."
    DSM: "....huh? Oh, crap."

I describe the scene to her. There were 10 bundles that I counted that were SOAKED! Given how many newspapers were scattered about, more may have been missing...the 10 were just the ones that were still bundled enough for me to tell they were separate bundles.

DSM: "Okay....crap. Uh...you probably want to get your route started. It will take me a while to get there."
Me: "No problem, I'll just go do my other route."

So I went and did my other route, which picks up from a different dropsite. When I got back, there were three other carriers, and my DSM had JUST arrived at the dropsite. Because apparently, two other dropsites were also hit! It was like someone went, "Let's go around town and vandalize as many newspapers in as many areas as we possible can!"

We dissected the bundles the pizza guys had rescued and picked out the papers that were salvagable. We got enough for the paper carriers that were there, and my DSM was trying to figure out which routes were left to be picked up and how many papers those routes needed. Yeah, it sucked.

Just another great way to cap off the weekend! Grrr.

My brother used to run newspaper routes, but I don't know the ins and outs of it. Are newspapers usually bundled with a plastic cover to protect from rain? Or are they stored out of the rain and someone went in and grabbed them and left them out in the rain or poured water on them? I don't get it - but yes, someone did indeed suck mightily.

They're not bundled with plastic, though if it's super rainy and windy they'll bag them in plastic trash bags. The drop sites are at mini malls and business that give us permission to drop there. The bundles are just stacked outside the building, under the overhang to keep them dry. Once in a while, someone will move them around, and sometimes people might steal a paper or two from the bundles. I've never seen the level of vandalism I saw this morning, though.

The paper should spring for boxes. Big ones. With locks.

Ah...I guess I misread the first post -- it was a dry day, but some jerkwads came along and dumped water all over the papers? Is that what happened? o_O

No, it was rainy. The papers were under a building overhang though so they could stay dry.
