He obviously has no clue how these type of gift cards work!

Very few people do, and that's because they don't work like store-issued gift cards.

On a store gift card, you just swipe the card through the reader, it applies funds toward your purchase, and if there's still a balance left you pay it some other way.

On Visa gift cards, you have to know what the balance is on it, and swipe it through for no more than that, otherwise it declines.

There's probably a reason for this, but I can't think of it.
