Couple points:

- Why not re-sell them as-is WITHOUT removing the lights?

- I believe cutting the lights and assorted wires off would include getting rid of the cord that plugs into the wall, eliminating the risk of an improperly cut wire starting a fire or shocking somebody, since there'd be no 120V power available to do that.

- Manager's suggested change would make the defective trees non-returnable to the DC, since they'd be modified.

1. Best guess I can make is it would make it too difficult for the owner to add lights of their own.

2. I hadn't thought of that. I can be a derp like that sometimes.

Write a note

I hate that. We had a lady who opened up a laptop b/c she wanted to see it. The display wasnt good enough for her. Well after she opened it and turned it on she decided she wanted it. Guess what she wanted a unopened box. UGG

On a case like that I would write a note on the sales slip stating the customer did just that! That way if they come back with the unit they bought claiming parts missing (A very important thing if they claim the expensive battery is missing and maybe scamming to get two) I would have that if it came to court.

It may well have come like that from the factory.
We do sell a ton of these things and this is the first time I have had a return because of a bare wire. (We've had the odd one with no power to it, but this is new.)

He could have done it himself when he was installing it, and the resulting blustering and lawyer threats was meant to cover up for it. (The whole "Me thinks thou doth protest too much"
as Peppergirl said.)

It sounds to me like he was deliberately making a big show of it because he simply didn't want it. Instead of being a big boy and just admitting that, he felt the need for overblown theatrics. Asshole.

Makes you wonder if he did the stripping himself to ensure the refund or if it's an older, worn item that he just bought a new replacement for.

I used to sometimes have store clerks open a box for me (I asked nicely) and test the item inside to make sure it worked - mostly electronics or small appliances - because I'd been burned too many times with stuff that didn't work when I got it home. But if it worked fine, THAT was the one I took home. Geez, people are douchebags...

If they insist on opening a new to box to make sure it's all there, or to make sure it works, why would they want a sealed box that hasn't been checked? SCs never make any sense.
