The fact that the wife mentioned in the OP had only a NI suggests that she was born outside of the country and (presumably) became a citizen as some part of the marriage process. Perhaps the ID requirements are different in that case...?

Actually, I have to agree with the customer on this one, in the sense that it's really not that easy to get your name under any bank when you don't have identification. I'm facing the same issue right now. My wallet was lifted last year, which contained my Social security card and my sheriff's ID, the only IDs I have. All I have left is my birth certificate. When I went online to the DMV's website, I was told the birth certificate is actually NOT a valid form of ID, and isn't worth any points. The only thing it's worth is for a proof of name.

As a result, I am unable to close or open any bank accounts.

        Actually no AFAIK. ...

Although I have a card with my name on it that is an account opened by him I have no responsibility for those payments at all. He is totally responsible for whatever I do with that account. Same for my accounts that he has a second card on - it's my responsibility only.
Whether it is true or not is immaterial. It is her perception of responsibility that matters. If she thinks she would be responsible, then she doesn't want her name on the card.

Naturally, as we on this forum have all seen, the CS's perception of reality is immutable, regardless of the facts.

          Daughter: "That's bullshit! He's disabled!"
This has nothing to do with whether or not his wife's name is on the card.

Hell at this point as far as you know they're taking advantage of his disability knowing he can't stop them from sucking his account dry.

In fact that's why there was such a crack down on spouses using each other's credit cards. Couples going through divorce were abusing the cards in revenge.

I think it's easier to start with the social security card and then go from there. It's been so long since I last lost my wallet, I can't remember how easy it was to replace everything, but I know the trip to the SS office only lasted about 15 minutes, most of which was filling out the form.

One of these days I'll actually get around to getting a state ID (as opposed to drivers license) to keep at home just in case I lose my wallet again, as then I'd have a picture ID to help with all the rest of the replacements.
