FTR, if you talk to anyone in the Northern Virginia area, all of them will Virginia is a "northern state" and don't you dare compare them to "those southerners". But generally these are the same people who want Northern Virginia to break away an make their own state.
Speaking as someone who lives in Northern Virginia, this is entirely true. Northern Virginia generally behaves (and, usually, votes) differently from the rest of the state. And it's why they say they're from Northern Virginia instead of just Virginia. "Virginia" by itself conjures up more "southern" images.

And nobody in Northern Virginia calls it "NoVa." To us, NOVA is Northern Virginia Community College.

Been done before - and an inaccurate name was chosen. The westernmost point in Virginia is further west than the westernmost point in West Virginia. Wonder what the people from (what's now) Northern Virginia would want to call their state if the proper name (North Virginia) had been chosen by those Virginians who didn't want to join the Confederacy?

As an aside, I've seen a trivia question that nobody from West Virginia would have got correct (at least as far as the posted answer went - the question itself had an error).

Q:What's the only state in the U.S. whose name consists of two words, neither of which is "North", "South", or "New"?
      A: Rhode Island

I just wanted to compose a post with Virginia in it. Virginia Virginia Virginia.

Also, something that's really irritating, is when you're searching for something in Virginia on ....google, and Google refuses to not show you West Virginia results.

        Regarding regional names:
I don't know if I've ever heard anyone call Northern Virginia NoVa outloud, it's mostly a "I don't feel like typing out the whole thing, and this definitely gets it across".

Unlike "Hampton Roads", which leads to "huh?", then "Near Norfolk.." "huh?" "And Virginia Beach..."....

        "oooh"...

(And even more fun is when you get people who want to debate the name of this region "Blaaaaaaaaaarg! it's TIDEWATER!" "No! It's Hampton Roads!" [Or, it's called "how come we don't have an NFL team, we're bigger than "x other smaller market"....]

I have too much time on my hands. Another pet peeve is when ...places automatically ad "county" to place names in Virginia. Yes, there is a James City County. But...that doesn't mean that Hampton is Hampton City County, it's just Hampton City, ditto EVERY OTHER CITY in the state. James City County is...well, a County, called James City. Well, James City County. If I type that one more time it's going to sound like gibberish in my head. Or cabbage. Cabbage, cabbage, cabbage. I don't know why. But they have Busch Gardens! And I think it's time for me to add MORE random CAPS.)

(oh, and my grandfather was from West Virginia. Well, no, he was from "West By God Virginia", apparently)
you are = you're. not "your".

I'm one of those very warm people to the touch but I become freezing cold too fast. In the summer, when my mother is complaining she's boiling hot and has the A/C on full blast, I always have to have the heat on. My uncle's the same way, apparently, will blast the heat in his car. It's got to be a French thing!

I *think* you can enter a search in a form like searchterm -"West" to make google behave. Not 100% sure.

Probably. Though, it's fun when people assume that WV and VA are the same place (these are the same people who think that New Mexico is another country....).

Yes, if you want Google to only return pages that don't contain a term, you can tell it so with the -"term" operator.

... and I'm still irritated that they changed required terms to have quotes around them instead of the plus sign at the beginning... it's more typing, and I have a habit of hitting return when I mean to hit the quotes. >_>
