I've been known to respond to "Are you deaf?" with "What?" Sometimes they'll start to repeat themselves, and then get really pissed off when they realize what I just did.

Heh. I've done that as well.

At the wholesale club, when there had been a long bout of someone's cart sitting in between the security pylons and setting them off, I'd get exchanges like this:

Them: "Doesn't that get on your nerves after a while?"
J2K: "What?"
Them: "I said doesn't that get on your nerves after a while?"
J2K: "What?"
Them:

Of course, I had one guy who apparently didn't get that I was making a joke, and kept repeating himself louder and louder until I had to tell him, truthfully, not really.

That reminds me of the smaller-sized sundaes they used to have (or maybe still do, I haven't eaten there in awhile) at Friendly's, called the "Happy ending." Seriously, someone wasn't thinking when they came up with that name.

That was from the "EXTREMELY Friendly's" line of desserts. Almost borderline erotic. Too bad they required payment upfront and not afterwards.

Server: "Hi! Welcome to Friendly's! What can I get for you?
Customer: (smiling) "Hi. Uh, yeah. I'd like a uh.. um, a 'happy ending'.."
Server: "Hmm.. Um, you're not a cop. Are you?"
